Battery Park

Battery Park is a 25-acre (10 ha) public park located at the southern tip of Manhattan Island in New York City, facing New York Harbor.

Name

The area and park are named for the artillery batteries that were positioned there in the city's early years to protect the settlement behind them.Battery Park City was named after the area.

In 2015, the New York City Department of Parks and the Battery Conservancy announced that the park would revert to its historic name, The Battery.

History

The southern shoreline of Manhattan Island had long been known as "The Battery," and has been a popular promenade since the 17th century. At the time, an artillery battery there served as protection to the town. The Battery was the center of Evacuation Day celebrations commemorating the departure of the last British troops in the United States after the American Revolutionary War. Just prior to the War of 1812, the West Battery, later renamed Castle Clinton, was erected on a small artificial offshore island nearby, to replace the earlier batteries in the area; later, when the land of Battery Park was created, it encircled and incorporated the island.

Master of Puppets

Master of Puppets is the third studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released on March 3, 1986 by Elektra Records. Recorded at the Sweet Silence Studios with producer Flemming Rasmussen, it was the first Metallica album released on a major label. Master of Puppets was the band's last album to feature bassist Cliff Burton, who died in a bus crash in Sweden during the album's promotional tour. The album peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 and became the first thrash metal album to be certified platinum. It was certified 6× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2003 for shipping six million copies in the United States. The album was eventually certified 6× platinum by Music Canada and gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

Master of Puppets was released to critical acclaim and has been included in several publications' best album lists. Its driving, virtuosic music and angry, political lyrics drew praise from critics outside the metal community. The album is considered the band's strongest effort of the period, and is one of the most influential heavy metal albums. Critics credit it for consolidating the American thrash metal scene with its atmospheric and meticulously performed songs. Many bands from all genres of heavy metal have covered the album's songs, including tribute albums.

Battery (baseball)

In baseball, the term battery refers collectively to the pitcher and the catcher, who may also be called batterymen or batterymates of one another.

History

The use of the word 'battery' in baseball was first coined by Henry Chadwick in the 1860s in reference to the firepower of a team's pitching staff and inspired by the artillery batteries then in use in the American Civil War. Later, the term evolved to indicate the combined effectiveness of pitcher and catcher.

Famous batteries

Some batteries are remarked upon as more than usually productive. Yogi Berra (catcher) and Whitey Ford (pitcher) were World-Series level players who were batterymates with the Yankees since Ford's rookie season in 1950. They started 212 games together.

In the early 20th century, some prominent pitchers were known to have picked their favorite catchers. Sportswriter Fred Lieb recalls the batteries of Christy Mathewson/Frank Bowerman beginning in 1899 with the New York Giants, Jack Coombs/Jack Lapp beginning in 1908 with the Philadelphia Athletics, Cy Young/Lou Criger gaining the greatest attention in 1901 with the Boston Americans (later the Red Sox), and Grover Cleveland Alexander/Bill Killefer beginning in 1911 with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Cosmic distance ladder

The cosmic distance ladder (also known as the extragalactic distance scale) is the succession of methods by which astronomers determine the distances to celestial objects. A real direct distance measurement of an astronomical object is possible only for those objects that are "close enough" (within about a thousand parsecs) to Earth. The techniques for determining distances to more distant objects are all based on various measured correlations between methods that work at close distances and methods that work at larger distances. Several methods rely on a standard candle, which is an astronomical object that has a known luminosity.

A Loss for Words (formerly Last Ride) was an American pop punk band from Abington/Hanover, Massachusetts.

History

Early years (1999–2004)

Matty Arsenault and Danny Poulin from Lions Lions started a new band, Last Ride, in 1999, it would soon feature Kreg Dudley, Chris Murphy, and Evan Cordeiro. The band had five names listed in a notebook before they changed it, and one of the names was A Loss for Words. The band would change its name to A Loss for Words after attending a minister's service. Mike Adams was soon drafted to play bass after the original bass player had no desire to play in front of people. Marc Dangora, from Mommy a Fly Flew Up My Pee Hole, joined in 2004.

Coming Soon to a Theater Near You, These Past 5 Years (EP), and split with They Sleep the Dream (2004–2007)

By April 2004, several tracks were posted on the band's PureVolume account: "Bullets Leave Holes", "Death or Glory", "Rose Colored Lens", "Shoot for Seven", "Faze 3", and "Warren's Eyes". The band recorded 3 songs with Matt Squire in College Park, Maryland, in January 2005. A track listing for a release called Coming Soon to a Theater Near You, released in 2004, was put up in February. In March, it was announced the band were in a studio recording six songs that would be released on an EP, to be released by Rock Vegas, with a planned release month of May. The tracks were finished being mixed by April, and a new release month set, June. Unmastered versions of two tracks, "A Theme for Your Ego" and "Bullets Leave Holes", from the EP were posted online in May. "A Theme for Your Ego" featured guest vocals by Brendan Brown from The Receiving End of Sirens. The band released their first EP on Rock Vegas on 1 July, called These Past 5 Years (2005). The EP sold over 1,000 copies in under two months. On September 23, Rock Vegas revealed the EP sold out in 4 weeks, and that they were repressing it with new disc art.

Distance (F.T. Island song)

"Distance" is a song by South Korean rock band F.T. Island. It is their sixth single under Warner Music Japan and ninth single overall in Japan. The song was written by Kenn Kato, Song Seunghyun and Lee Jaejin, and composed by Corin. It was released on November 30, 2011, in three editions: a Standard Edition, and Limited Edition Types A and B. The single debuted at number four on the Oricon weekly chart and at number eight on the Billboard Japan Hot 100. It went on to sell over 44,500 copies in Japan.

Composition

"Distance" was written by Kenn Kato, Song Seunghyun and Lee Jaejin, and composed by Corin. "Life" and "Venus" were written by Lee Jaejin and Kenn Kato; the former was composed by Choi Jong-hoon, the latter by Lee Jaejin .

Release and promotion

"Distance" was released on November 30, 2011, in three editions: a Standard Edition, a Limited Edition Type A which included footage from the band's Tour 2011 Summer Final "Messenger" at the Nippon Budokan, the music video for "Distance" and a special feature, and a Limited Edition Type B that included five covers, each designed by one band member.
