    Bates Motel is an American drama-thriller television series developed by Carlton Cuse, Kerry Ehrin and Anthony Cipriano for A&E.

    Using characters and elements from the novel Psycho by Robert Bloch, the series serves as a prequel to the 1960 film of the same name directed by Alfred Hitchcock, albeit with a contemporary setting. Following the death of her abusive husband, Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga) relocates to the fictional town of White Pine Bay, Oregon with her son Norman (Freddie Highmore). There, she purchases a small motel and attempts to start a new life with her son. They are soon intercepted by Norma's estranged son, Dylan (Max Thieriot), who carries his secrets. The three of them are quick to discover that the idyllic town is not at all what it seems and that dangerous secrets lurk around every corner. The series premiered on March 18, 2013 and has received generally positive reviews.As of May 11, 2015, 30 episodes of Bates Motel have aired, concluding the third season.

    Bates Motel (season 2)

    The second season of Bates Motel consisted of 10 episodes and premiered on A&E on March 3, 2014. The season aired on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on A&E, and concluded on May 5, 2014. The series itself is described as a "contemporary prequel" to the 1960 film Psycho and follows the life of Norman Bates and his mother Norma in the fictional town of White Pine Bay, Oregon prior to the events portrayed in the Hitchcock film.

    The season received positive reviews from television critics, and the premiere episode drew in a total of 3.07 million viewers.Bates Motel was renewed for a third season after five episodes of the second season had aired. For her performance as Norma Louise Bates in the second season, Vera Farmiga received nominations for the 2014 Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series and the 2014 Saturn Award for Best Actress on Television. The second season was released on Blu-ray and DVD on October 7, 2014.

    Plot

    Four months after the events of the first season, the Bates Motel has become a hot spot for vacationers, though plans for a new bypass could affect its success. Norma Louise Bates (Vera Farmiga) is worried about her son Norman (Freddie Highmore), who is practicing taxidermy and obsessing over Miss Watson's (Keegan Connor Tracy) unsolved murder. During a visit to her grave, Norman sees an older man there and assumes he could be the killer. When he tells Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell), the sheriff takes the opportunity to ask Norman about his whereabouts on the night of her death.
