Basmath or Vasmat is a city and a municipal council in Hingoli district in the state of Maharashtra, India.
As of 2001 India census, Basmath had a population of 57,360. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Basmath has an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 58% of the males and 42% of females literate. 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.
There are 3 degree colleges – Bahirji Smarak Mahavidylaya Vasmath and Yoganand Mahavidylaya, and Raosaheb Patange arts college. Also along with many near by site seeings. Schools like Sarswati Vidya Niketan, Mahatma Gandhi Vidhyalaya are welknown in the town.There is small village named Shivpuri at 3–4 km distance from Basmath Bus Station which is famous for its 100+ years old Balaji Temple
Basmath is the only tehsil in Hingoli district which is well irrigated and having well agricultural land.

Basmath (constituency number 92) is one of the three Vidhan Sabha constituencies located in Hingoli district. It covers the entire Basmath tehsil and part of Aundha tehsil of this district.
Basmath is part of the Hingoli Lok Sabha constituency along with five other Vidhan Sabha segments, namely Kalamnuri and Hingoli in Hingoli district and Umarkhed, Kinwat and Hadgaon in Nanded district.
