Barre /ˈbæri/ is a city in Washington County, Vermont, in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 9,052. Barre City is almost completely surrounded by Barre Town, which is a separate municipality.

Barre is often twinned with nearby Montpelier in local media and businesses. It is the main city in the Barre Micropolitan area which, at 59,564 residents, is the third largest in Vermont (after Burlington and Rutland). Barre itself is the largest city in Washington County, and is the fourth-largest city and tenth largest municipality in Vermont.

Alfred Hitchcock's movie The Trouble With Harry premiered at the Paramount Theater in Barre on September 27, 1955.

History

On November 6, 1780, the land was granted to William Williams and 64 others. Originally called Wildersburgh, it included what is today both the town and city of Barre. It was first settled in 1788 by John Goldsbury and Samuel Rodgers, together with their families. But dissatisfied with the name Wildersburgh, citizens renamed the town after Isaac Barré, a champion of the American Colonies. In 1895, 4.0 square miles (10.4 km²) within the town was set off and incorporated as the separate city.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 30.7 square miles (79.5 km²), of which 30.6 square miles (79.4 km²) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.1 km²) (0.16%) is water. Barre is known for its granite quarries.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 7,602 people, 2,951 households, and 2,216 families residing in the town. The population density was 248.1 people per square mile (95.8/km²). There were 3,046 housing units at an average density of 99.4 per square mile (38.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.47% White, 0.18% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.18% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.51% of the population.

It is bordered to the west by New York, the south by Massachusetts, the east by New Hampshire and to the north by the Canadian province of Quebec. With a population of 7,671, the state capital of Montpelier is the least populous state capital in the US. Vermont's most populous city is Burlington. With a 2013 population of 42,284, Burlington is the least populous city in the United States to be the largest city within a state. Burlington's metropolitan area has a population of 214,796. Vermont is one of the most racially homogeneous states; 94.3% of its population identified as non-Hispanic white in 2010.

Vermont wine

Vermont wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of Vermont. The first commercial winery in Vermont, Snow Farm Winery, opened in 1997. Vermont is a very cold climate for viticulture. Vermont wineries have focused on using cold-hardy French hybrid grapes, but have been experimenting with some Vitis vinifera varieties. Some Vermont wineries produce wine made from grapes grown in other states, especially New York.

Vermont (band)

Vermont was a Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based indie rock band and collaboration between Davey von Bohlen and Dan Didier of The Promise Ring and Chris Roseanau of Pele. The band released two albums on Kindercore Records and broke up in 2001, before von Bohlen founding the band Maritime.
