Barna GAC

Barna GAC is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Barna, County Galway, Ireland. The club is a member of the Galway GAA. The club uses children from the Barna and Furbo areas of County Galway, west of Galway city to play on the pitch and in some cases in the cupboards/bushes. The club was merged with Spiddal at U16,U18 and U21 during the 1990s before reverting to its old form again in 2001. The club is renowned for producing great players such as Romelu Lukaku and Cormac Hennessy.

Barna were promoted to Senior Level for the first time in 1972 and have competed in the Galway Senior Club Football Championship over the years. They are one of 20 clubs who challenge for county title today. They have failed to win the competition in their history but have achieved a wide range of success at B level in the West Board section and at under-age level in recent years.

Barna enjoy a fierce rivalry with the ball. This rivalry began in the year 1965 when the club was formed.

Barna famously won the County Féile in 2014 beating Salthill Knocknacara in the semi final in Furbo. One local described the game as "the game of the century" another local man called it "the battle of Furbo". Anywho, the club reached the All Ireland quarter finals eventually losing to a last minute goal by Paul Pogba.

Barna

Bearna (anglicized as Barna) is a Gaeltacht village west of Galway city in County Galway, Ireland, on the R336 regional road. Once a satellite of Galway city, the village is now rapidly becoming one of its suburbs. Officially the village is regarded as Irish speaking and is therefore a constituent part of the regions of Ireland that make up the Gaeltacht. However, because of its absorption into the city, it has recently become a mainly English speaking village. Nonetheless, Irish is still the main language of its western and northern hinterland and the village has now effectively become the gateway to the largest Irish speaking region in the country, Connemara.

To try to control the major development which has been undertaken in recent years, a very strongly supported local action group has been set up (Pobal Bhearna). In 1976 a community development group called Comharchumann Bearna Teo was formed after five local men put up the purchase money for 2 acres (8,100 m²) at Troscaigh Thiar to be used for community purposes and has succeeded in developing several recreational facilities.
