Barking!

Barking! is a British children's TV series that produced two series between 2004 & 2005. The show was originally broadcast on ITV1's children's slot CITV. It stars Katy McGowan as Jezza, a teenage girl with a talking dog named Georgie, voiced by Will Mellor. Other major characters in the show included Jezza's mother, Pippa (Robin Weaver), her stepbrothers Dan (Adam Scourfield) and Ollie (Tom Millner), and her stepfather, Greg (Charles Dale).

Barking is a suburban town in east London, England, and forms part of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. It is 8.8 miles (14.2 km) east of Charing Cross and is one of 35 major centres identified in the London Plan. It was historically a fishing and agrarian settlement in the county of Essex and formed an ancient parish. Its economic history is characterised by a shift to market gardening, and industrial development to the south adjacent to the River Thames. The railway station opened in 1854 and has been served by the London Underground since 1908. As part of the suburban growth of London in the 20th century, Barking significantly expanded and increased in population, primarily due to the development of the London County Council estate at Becontree in the 1920s, and it became a municipal borough in 1931. It has formed part of Greater London since its annexation in 1965. In addition to an extensive and fairly low-density residential area, the town centre forms a large retail and commercial district, currently a focus for regeneration. The former industrial lands to the south are being redeveloped as Barking Riverside.

Barking (TV series)

Barking is a late night sketch comedy show broadcast on Channel 4 in 1998, starring Mackenzie Crook, David Walliams, Omid Djalili, Peter Kay, Dave Lamb, Rhys Thomas, Catherine Tate and Marcus Brigstocke. The series featured up-and-coming comedians, most of whom went on to successful careers.

The was released on DVD in November 2011.

Episodes

Episode 1: This first episode features a guided tour of Buckingham Palace, a WI meeting that goes horribly wrong and introduces us to Mr Bagshaw: bully, sadist, social misfit and Maths teacher. There is also a special guest appearance from an Airfix Matthew Kelly blowing up a block of flats.

Episode 2: Britain's most unsuccessful actor tries to get a job as a dolphin, a team of blasphemous vicars have a crisis moving into their new parish and a desperately right-on couple host a dinner party 'ethnic style'

Episode 3: Two old school friends have a very bad night in the pub, a society wedding arranges takes a blushing bride firmly in hand and a pair of jealous lovers set out to prove their devotion to each other is deep, true and surprisingly violent

Barking (album)

Barking is the eighth studio album by British electronic group Underworld, released on 2 September 2010. The lead single, "Scribble", produced with Welsh drum and bass producer High Contrast, was released on 28 June 2010. The band released a radio edit of the track for free download on their website on 13 May 2010.

Each track on the album was written by band members Karl Hyde and Rick Smith in Essex, before being sent to producers well known for their contributions to trance, drum and bass and dubstep. The album sees further collaboration with Mark Knight and D. Ramirez, whose 2009 single, "Downpipe", featured lyrics and vocals by Hyde.

Barking received positive reviews from most music critics. The album debuted at number twenty-six on the UK Albums Chart, selling 5,146 copies in its first week.

There are seven slightly modified variations of the cover artwork - depending on edition and format - all created by John Warwicker.

The album is named after Barking, an eastern borough of London.

Municipal Borough of Barking

Barking was a local government district, and later civil parish and borough, in southwest Essex, England from 1882 to 1965. It was known as Barking Town from 1882 to 1931. The district included the town of Barking, eastern Beckton and the southwestern part of the Becontree estate. The district was within the Metropolitan Police District and experienced a steady increase in population during its existence. It now forms the western part of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and the eastern extremity of the London Borough of Newham in Greater London.

Background

The ancient parish of Barking covered an area of 12,307 acres (49.80 km²) in the Becontree hundred. The parish was the largest in Essex in terms of area and was divided into the four wards of Town, Ripple, Great Ilford and Chadwell. The Town ward covered land immediately to the east and west of the River Roding and the Ripple ward stretched from Longbridge Road in the north to the River Thames in the south taking in Creekmouth and the western part of the modern estate of Becontree. Chadwell ward was immediately to the northeast including Goodmayes, part of Chadwell Heath and Little Heath. Great Ilford was to the northwest and included the modern areas of Barkingside, Clayhall, Gants Hill, Ilford, Redbridge and Seven Kings.

Barking is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 1994 by Margaret Hodge of the Labour Party.

Constituency profile

Barking covers the western two-thirds of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, in overall terms forming a mid-south portion of east London; its economy is diverse from major retail and manufacturing to its power station, with some commuting, particularly in its growing minority of expensive neighbourhoods. Ford Dagenham has lost its assembly workforce but expanded its diesel engine production workforce. The plant is split between this and the neighbouring constituency.

Barking's side-by-side twin nature reserves have grassland and bird habitat by a bend of the River Thames and are somewhat incongruously next to a disused and operational power plant for the industrial works in the east of its modest-length riverside. A large majority of its homes are north of the largely three-lane A13 (within Greater London). The constituency has benefited from the Summer Olympics 2012 in London and its districts include a larger than average proportion of social housing and earners on low incomes. The area has elected Labour MPs since its creation in 1945, usually with strong majorities. Bucking the national trend, the incumbent MP for that party, Margaret Hodge, almost doubled her majority at the General Election in 2010.
