Banzai Cliff

Banzai Cliff is a historic site at the northern tip of Saipan island in the Northern Mariana Islands. It was, along with Suicide Cliff further inland, the site of numerous suicides by Japanese civilians and soldiers, towards the end of the Battle of Saipan in 1944. Hundreds jumped to their deaths rather than be captured by the Americans. Some who jumped did not die and were rescued by American ships.

A 7.5-acre (3.0 ha) area at the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The site is also a contributing element to the Landing Beaches; Aslito/Isley Field; & Marpi Point, Saipan Island National Historic Landmark District.

Cliff

In geography and geology, a cliff is a vertical, or near vertical, rock exposure. Cliffs are formed as erosion landforms due to the processes of erosion and weathering that produce them. Cliffs are common on coasts, in mountainous areas, escarpments and along rivers. Cliffs are usually formed by rock that is resistant to erosion and weathering. Sedimentary rocks most likely to form cliffs include sandstone, limestone, chalk, and dolomite. Igneous rocks such as granite and basalt also often form cliffs.

An escarpment (or scarp) is a type of cliff, formed by the movement of a geologic fault, or a landslide.

Most cliffs have some form of scree slope at their base. In arid areas or under high cliffs, these are generally exposed jumbles of fallen rock. In areas of higher moisture, a soil slope may obscure the talus. Many cliffs also feature tributary waterfalls or rock shelters. Sometimes a cliff peters out at the end of a ridge, with tea tables or other types of rock columns remaining. Coastal erosion may lead to the formation of sea cliffs along a receding coastline.

Cliff (album)

Cliff Richard's first album Cliff was released in April 1959 and reached No. 4 in the UK album chart. It was recorded live at Abbey Road Studios in February 1959 with The Shadows, then known as The Drifters, in front of an invited audience of 200 to 300 fans. It features live recordings of Cliff's hit single "Move It" and both sides of the yet to be released Drifters' instrumental single "Jet Black"/"Driftin'" as well as a number of rock 'n' roll standards.

Release

The album was released originally in mono only (Columbia 33 SX 1147) but was also released in two parts as 45rpm EPs (Cliff No.1 and Cliff No.2 in both mono and stereo. Both versions use the same takes but with slightly different audience noise.

The album was first released on CD in 1987 (EMI CDP 7482772) in the original mono version. It was reissued in 1998 (EMI 495 4382) with both the mono and stereo versions on the same disc. It was also released in 2001 (EMI 534 6002) with the stereo version only along with the stereo version of the follow-up album Cliff Sings as part of the 2 on 1 series.

Banzai! (magazine)

Banzai!, officially stylized BANZAI!, is a discontinued shōnen manga anthology that was published in Germany by Carlsen Verlag, from November 2001 to December 2005. It debuted in November 2001 as a German language adaptation of the popular Japanese manga anthology Weekly Shōnen Jump, published by Shueisha. In addition to various series from Weekly Shōnen Jump, the magazine serialized some original German manga-influenced comics, including Crewman 3. Issues also included educational articles to teach readers Japanese and columns with news updates on anime and manga series. Series published in the magazine were also published in tankōbon volumes under the Banzai! präsentiert and the highly popular series under the Best of Banzai! label. The name Banzai! came from the transliteration of 10,000 years, a traditional Japanese exclamation.

Banzai! was the first German manga magazine aimed at boys.Banzai! initially circulated with 130,000 copies per period.

The magazine was discontinued in December 2005 due to Shueisha declining to renew Carlsen Verlag's license for the adaptation. The German division of Tokyopop was able to acquire the license to publish other tankōbon volumes of the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. The already published manga volumes from Banzai! remain under the Banzai! präsentiert line.
