Bank of Mauritius

The Bank of Mauritius is the central bank of the Republic of Mauritius. It was established in September 1967 as the central bank of Mauritius. It was modelled on the Bank of England and was, in effect, set up with the assistance of senior officers of the Bank of England. Amongst its responsibilities is the issuance of the Mauritian currency, the Mauritian rupee.

History

In the 19th Century three separate commercial banks, now all defunct, operated under the Bank of Mauritius name.

The first Bank of Mauritius started operations in 1813 or so, but survived only until 1825.

The second Bank of Mauritius was a British overseas bank with two boards of directors, one in London and the other in Port Louis. It began operations in 1832 and favored the interests of the planter class. In 1838 traders established Mauritius Commercial Bank to give themselves an alternative source of credit as until its establishment the Bank of Mauritius had a monopoly on the island. The financial crisis of 1847 in London resulted in the collapse of the sugar market, and severe losses to both of Mauritius's banks. Bank of Mauritius ceased business in 1848, though the Mauritius Commercial Bank has survived to the present.

Bank of Mauritius Tower

The Bank of Mauritius Tower is a skyscraper which is located in Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius. It is the country's tallest building when measured to roof at 98 m (321 ft) and to pinnacle at 124 m (407 ft). The 16,834 m² reinforced concrete structure which dominates the city's skyline reached its final height in May 2006. The 22 storeyed building towers over the Citadel (a hill-top fortification in Port Louis) and is constructed in an area where highrises were once prohibited. It is also the second tallest structure in Mauritius after the much taller 183 m (600 ft) Bigara Station Transmitter (guyed mast) in the upper Plaines Wilhems.

Its construction took nearly 30 months and is resistant to the seasonal hurricanes which occur in the region. Owing to its function, it is probably the most technically advanced building in Mauritius.

Other tall buildings in Mauritius are the Telecom Tower with its twin lightning rods pointing at 110 m, the 82 m State Bank Tower and the Air Mauritius Centre with a helipad at 79 m over the ground. Outside Port Louis, the Ebene Cyber Tower is 72 m high. Malherbes Station Transmitter (guyed mast) in Curepipe is 97 m tall.

Mauritius (ⁱ/məˈrɪʃəs/; French: Maurice), officially the Republic of Mauritius (French: République de Maurice), is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) off the southeast coast of the African continent. The country includes the island of Mauritius, Rodrigues (560 kilometres (350 mi) east), and the outer islands (Agaléga, St. Brandon and two disputed territories). The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues (172 km (107 mi) southwest) form part of the Mascarene Islands, along with nearby Réunion, a French overseas department. The area of the country is 2,040 km². The capital and largest city is Port Louis.

The island of Mauritius was visited during the medieval period by the Arabs and then by the Portuguese, who named it Dina Arobi and Cirne, respectively. The island was uninhabited until the Dutch Republic established a colony in 1638, with the Dutch naming the island after Prince Maurice van Nassau. The Dutch colony was abandoned in 1710, and, five years later, the island became a French colony and was named Isle de France. Due to its strategic position, Mauritius was known as the "star and key" of the Indian Ocean.

Its popularity is due to Mauritius, a saint of the Theban Legion (died 287). Mauritius is otherwise attested as a given name of the Roman Empire period, in origin meaning "one from Mauritania", i.e. "the Moor".

Mauritius (1618 ship)

The Mauritius was an early 17th Century Dutch wooden-hulled sailing ship, documented as being in service to the Dutch East India Company between 1618 to 1622.

History

1618 Discoveries

On the 1618 voyage, the ship was commanded by Supercargo Willem Janszoon and captained by Lenaert Jacobszoon, when they sighted North West Cape in Western Australia on 31 July 1618. On that occasion they had believed that the mainland peninsular west of the Exmouth Gulf, was an island. They went ashore there and it is written that they discovered human footprints, as follows.
