Mother Bengal

The Mother Bengal (Bengali: বাংলা মা , Bangla Maa), a female personification of Bengal was created during Bengali renaissance and later adopted by the Bengali nationalists. In Bengaldeshi poetry, literature and patriotic song, she has become a symbol of Bangladesh, considered as a personification of the Republic. The Mother Bengal represents not only biological motherness but its attributed characteristics as well – protection, never ending love, consolation, care, the beginning and the end of life. In Amar Sonar Bangla, the national anthem of Bangladesh, Rabindranath Tagore has used the word "Maa" (Mother) numerous times to refer to the motherland i.e. Bengal. Despite her popularity in patriotic songs and poems, her physical representations and images are rare.

History

Partition of Bengal (1905)

During the period of বঙ্গভঙ্গ Bônggôbhônggô (Partition of Bengal (1905)) - when the ruling British empire had the province of Bengal (of undivided India) split into two parts, many Bengali intellectuals joined cultural and political movement against the partition. The partition took place in October 1905 and separated the largely Muslim eastern areas from the largely Hindu western areas. The Hindus of West Bengal who dominated Bengal's business and rural life complained that the division would make them a minority in a province that would incorporate the province of Bihar and Odisha. It was during this time the Mother Bengal was an immensely popular theme in Bengali patriotic songs and poems and was mentioned in several of them, such as the song ″Dhana Dhanya Pushpa Bhara″ and ″Banga Amar Janani Amar″ (Our Bengal Our Mother) by Dwijendralal Ray. These songs were meant to rekindle the unified spirit of Bengal, to raise public consciousness against the communal political divide.

'Maa...Tomay Chara Ghum Asena' , also called Maa (Mother) was a Bengali television serial telecast by Star Jalsha.

Production

The show was produced by Shree Venkatesh Films. For 4 years it had the greatest TRP in Bengali television. The serial ended with a large dhamaka episode on August 3, 2014. The episode featured stars of other serials as well as film personalities like Koel Mallick and Raj Chakraborty.

Remakes

The show has been remade in Hindi as Meri Maa which used to air on Life Ok.

The show was also remade into Malayalam as Amma which was aired in Asianet 2012-2015

Dhoop Mein Thandi Chaav...Maa

Dhoop Mein Thandi Chaav...Maa also known as Maa is a Hindi-language television series that aired on Zee TV channel. The series premiered on 12 January 2009 and aired every Monday to Friday at 7pm IST. The series concluded on 17 April 2009.

This series was once considered as one of the best on Zee TV, however, it went off-air just three months after it started. Reasons to why the series was pulled was uncertain but, according to the cast, it was definitely not because of TRPs.

Plot

The show is about Apara’s tirade against society and her three children’s suffering in the light of the fact that they are separated from her safety.

Circumstances force Apara and her children to seek refuge in another house. The story shows how she overcomes the obstacles and tries to come out unscathed and unmarred, at the same time not letting go of her family’s honor.

Bangla (band)

Bangla is a folk-rock band from Bangladesh. Formed by the popular indie musician Arnob, Bangla mainly blends the traditional Bangladeshi folk genres like Baul, Lalon together with western flavours like jazz, blues, rock etc. The band released its first album Kingkortobbobimurho in 2002. Over the years, the band has emerged as a prominent music group in the country and became one of the most sought after bands, especially among the urban youth listeners.

Formation

The formation of the band dates back to the late '90s when Arnob was a student of Visva-Bharati University at Santiniketan. Due to his interest in music, he casually formed a band with his friends in Santineketan in a motive to spread out Bengali folk songs. One day, Anusheh came to visit Shantiniketan, who was a family friend of Arnob. Anusheh, who was well trained on Indian Classical Music, subsequently accepted the invitation of Arnob and became the lead vocalist. On their visit to Lalon's shrine in Kushtia, Arnob and Anusheh met Buno, a close friend of Anusheh and a bassist. The trio performed together at a public concert in Kolkata Book Fair in 1999. Their performance received good feedback from the audience. The same year, Arnob moved to Dhaka. The band was then joined by Kartik, former guitarist of Prachayanat. and Shantanu on drums. Thus they came to be known as the band "Bangla". A year later, Nazrul, also an acquaintance of Anusheh, joined as the Dhol player.
