Baldwinsville, New York

Baldwinsville is a village in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 7,378 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jewel of New York.

Baldwinsville is located in the towns of Lysander and Van Buren.

History

The village is named after Dr. Jonas Baldwin Dr. Baldwin built a dam across the Seneca River to generate energy and a private canal to keep the integrity of the water highway. It incorporated in 1848 as the Village of Baldwinsville. Prior to this, the community was known by a number of other names, including McHarrie's Rifts.

Baldwinsville initially grew as a local center for a prosperous farming area, with numerous mills along the north and south shores of the Seneca River. A canal on the north shore of the river allowed boats to navigate around the dam. In the early 1900s this canal was superseded with the construction of the New York State Barge Canal on the south shore of the river. In the early 1900s the village was also served by the Erie Lackawanna Railway, connecting Baldwinsville to the cities of Syracuse and Oswego. In addition to agriculture, Baldwinsville had small factories, such as Morris Machine Works, Jardine Bronze Foundry, and others. A large brewery now owned by Anheuser-Busch was constructed immediately east of the village in the mid-1970s to take advantage of ample water supplies from Lake Ontario. As agriculture and industry have receded, Baldwinsville has evolved into an attractive riverside community.

Baldwin (LIRR station)

Baldwin is a station on the Babylon Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. It is officially located on Sunrise Highway and Grand Avenue in Baldwin, New York, although it also includes Milburn and Brooklyn Avenues.

History

Baldwin Station was originally built in February 1868 by the South Side Railroad of Long Island, though trains had already been stopping there, then called Baldwinsville, since October 28, 1867. The station was remodeled in May 1881, and was razed in 1917, and a second station was opened on December 28, later that year. As part of the grade elimination project taking place along the Babylon Branch throughout the Babylon-Montauk Branch between the 1940s and 1960s this station was razed in November 1957, and officially replaced with the current elevated structure on October 2, 1957 after the last ground level train passed through at 12:18 pm.

Platform and tracks

The station has one 12-car-long high-level island platform between the two tracks. The platform includes an extension over the Grand Avenue bridge between the two tracks that is covered with a gabled roof.

Baldwinville, Massachusetts

Baldwinville is an unincorporated village and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Templeton in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 2,028 at the 2010 census. The name also refers to the local post office or railroad station. Some people, perhaps confusing it with the place in New York, erroneously call it "Baldwinsville".

Geography

Baldwinville is located at 42°36′37″N 72°4′31″W / 42.61028°N 72.07528°W / 42.61028; -72.07528 (42.610167, -72.075239).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.4 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.80%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,852 people, 677 households, and 465 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 288.3/km² (748.1/mi²). There were 700 housing units at an average density of 109.0/km² (282.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.84% White, 0.16% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.81% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.78% of the population.
