Bahawalnagar

Bahawalnagar (Punjabi,Urdu: بہاولنگر), is the capital city of Bahawalnagar District situated in the south east region in the Punjab province of Pakistan. It also contains the administrative headquarters of the tehsil. It is 192 miles south of Lahore and about 120 miles east of Bahwalpur. River Satluj passes on the northern side at a distance of about 6 miles.

History

Bahawalnagar originally known as Rojhanwali was a small settlement consisting of few huts and shacks. This village Rojhanwali is still in existence at a distance of about 1.5 miles north of the Railway Station. In the year 1895, railway station was established and was named as Rojhanwali Railway Station. It was a Junction between Bahawalnagar and Bhatinda at distance of 113 miles, now linking branch lines Amrooka and Fortabbas. Before partition it was very busy junction. Trains used to run from Karachi to Delhi and vice versa via Bahawalnagar. Passenger trains also used to run from Bahawalnagar to Fazilka, Ferozpur. There was a locoshed and two institutes meant for recreation.

Bahawalnagar District (Urdu: ضِلع بہاولنگر), is a district of Punjab province in Pakistan. Before the independence of Pakistan, Bahawalnagar was part of Bahawalpur state governed by the Nawab of Bahawalpur. The city of Bahawalnagar is the capital of the district. It is located in the south east of the Punjab province, Bahawalnagar district is bordered by India to its south and east, Bahawalpur to its south and south west, Vehari to its west and north west and Okara and Pakpattan to its north.

Languages

As per national census of 1998 Punjabi (in Majhi and Malwi dialects) is the main language of Bahawalnagar district spoken by 1.3 million people which accounts for 95% of the total population of 1.37 million. Riasti (Saraiki) is spoken by 42,000 people (3%) of the district population.Urdu, the national language, is spoken widely while English spoken by the educated elite.
