Bagalkot district

Bāgalkot district (/ˈbɑːɡələkoʊteɪ/; Kannada: ಬಾಗಲಕೋಟೆ) is an administrative district in the Indian state of Karnataka. The district headquarters is located in the town of Bagalkote. The district is located in northern Karnataka and borders Belgaum, Gadag, Koppal, Raichur and Bijapur. The new Bagalkote district was carved out of Bijapur in 1997 via Government of Karnataka directive Notification RD 42 LRD 87 Part III. The bifurcated Bagalkote district consists of nine taluks — Badami, Bagalkote, Bilagi, Hunagund, Jamakhandi, Mudhol, Ilkal, Guledgudda and Rabkavi-Banahatti.

Historically, Bagalkote was the capital of the Chalukyan Empire of South India under Pulakeshin I, who conquered the district in 550 CE. Bagalkot's Badami taluk remained the seat of the throne of the Chalukyas from 550 CE — 753 CE, when Chalukya king Kirtivarman II was overthrown by the Rashtrakutas.

Remnants of Chalukyan art and architecture are important tourist attractions in Bagalkote. Pattadakallu has many UNESCO World Heritage temples built by Vikramaditya II, while Aihole, which lies on the banks of the Malaprabha River, is an important temple town with over 140 temples belonging to both the early and later Chalukya times. The cave temples of Badami Cave Temples and the Jain temples of Rashtrakutas at Lokapura and Bilgi are also famous.

Bagalkot

Bagalkot or Bagalkote is a town in the Indian state of Karnataka. Bagalkote is the district headquarters of the Bagalkot district. It is one of the major towns in North Karnataka.

History

According to stone inscriptions in the surrounding area, the town's name was formerly Bagadige. According to legend, the town was given to the Bajantries (musicians) by Ravana, the king of Lanka who ruled this area. One of the Bijapur kings is said to have presented the town to his daughter as bangle money (a tradition in which the daughter is given money to buy bangles, sarees, gold ornaments from her parents after the marriage). Consequently, the place acquired the name Bagdikot, which later became Bagalkot. Bagalkot remained under successive dominions of Vijayanagar emperors, Peshwas, Hyderali of Mysore, Maratha rulers, and finally the British in 1818. In 1865, it was established as a municipality and civic amenities were provided to the residents of Bagalkot. The place was a noted centre of freedom movement and the Unification movement.

Bagalkot (Lok Sabha constituency)

Bagalkot Lok Sabha constituency (Kannada: ಬಾಗಲಕೋಟೆ ಲೋಕ ಸಭೆ ಚುನಾವಣಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ) is one of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka state in southern India. This constituency came into existence in 1967.
