Baby talk

Baby talk, also referred to as caretaker speech, infant-directed speech (IDS) or child-directed speech (CDS).

It is usually delivered with a "cooing" pattern of intonation different from that of normal adult speech: high in pitch, with many glissando variations that are more pronounced than those of normal speech. It frequently displays hyperarticulation, which is an increase in the distances between peripheral vowels (such as [i], [u], and [a]). Baby talk is also characterized by the shortening and simplifying of words. Baby talk is similar to what is used by people when talking to their pets (pet-directed speech). When adults talk to each other using baby talk it is generally to either show affection by emulating the fondness shown by adults for children, or as a form of bullying or condescension as children are much less cognitively developed than adults, implying that the adult receiving the baby talk is less intelligent than the adult talking to them.

"Baby Talk" is a 1985 freestyle dance/pop single by Alisha. Originally recorded and released by Gregg Brown in 1984, Alisha's version was popular in the dance clubs and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart in December 1985.

Background and chart performance

"Baby Talk" was written by singer-songwriter Greg Brown and Logankoya. It was originally a single performed by Brown, released in the UK in 1984 on Beau-Jolly Records. Alisha's version was produced by Mark S. Berry and released on Vanguard Records in September 1985 as the third single from her debut album Alisha. "Baby Talk" became Alisha's most successful single to date, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance charts in the final week of December 1985. The single crossed over to the Hot 100 charts reaching No. 68 in February 1986, and on the Hot Black Singles chart, peaking at No. 75. It was also released in the UK on Total Control Records, and reached No. 67 on the UK Singles Chart.

O-Ie Sōdō

O-Ie Sōdō (御家騒動, literally "honorable house strife") were noble family disputes within the samurai and aristocratic classes of Japan, particularly during the early Edo period (17th century). The most famous is the Date Sōdō, which broke out among the Date family in the 1660s–70s.

The Tokugawa shogunate which ruled Japan in the Edo period established itself by subjugating warlords (daimyo), militant religious groups (ikki), and other violent groups; their control was predicated on a forcibly imposed peace. As a result, these sorts of noble house disputes, which often came quite close to erupting into outright battle, and which often took place among the powerful tozama families, posed a serious threat to the stability of the bakuhan (shogunate-fiefdom) political system. These events were thus taken very seriously by the government, but also became very popular tales among the people, and were regarded as being quite interesting and exciting, due to the political and physical conflict involved. A number were related in books, and several were even transformed into plays and performed on the Kabuki or bunraku stage, under the genre known as O-ie-mono (御家物) or O-Ie Kyōgen (御家狂言).

£sd (occasionally written Lsd) is the popular name for the pre-decimal currencies once common throughout Europe, especially in the British Isles and hence in several countries of the British Empire and subsequently the Commonwealth. The abbreviation originates from the Latin currency denominations librae, solidi, and denarii. In the United Kingdom, which was one of the last to abandon the system, these were referred to as pounds, shillings, and pence (pence being the plural of penny). When spoken it was pronounced "ell-ess-dee", or more commonly "pounds, shillings and pence".

This system originated in the classical Roman Empire. It was re-introduced into Western Europe by Charlemagne, and was the standard for many centuries across the continent. In Britain it was King Offa of Mercia who adopted the Frankish silver standard of librae, solidi and denarii in the late 8th century, and the system was used in much of the British Commonwealth until the 1960s and 1970s, with Nigeria being the last to abandon it with the introduction of the naira on 1 January 1973.
