Baby mama

A baby mama (also baby-mama and baby-mother) is a mother who is not married to her child's father, although the term is often infused with other meanings as well.

Definition

Originally, the term was used by the fathers of illegitimate children to describe the mothers of their children, but the term is now in general use to describe any single mother. Since entering currency in U.S. tabloids, the terms baby mama and baby daddy have even begun to be applied to married and engaged celebrities.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines baby mama as "the mother of a man's child, who is not his wife or (in most cases) his current or exclusive partner".

Peter L. Patrick, a linguistics professor who studies Jamaican English, has said of the terms baby mother and baby father, "[they] definitely imply there is not a marriage—not even a common-law marriage, but rather that the child is an 'outside' child".

The term "baby-mother" in Jamaica is most often used to describe any pregnant woman or any woman with a young child. For example, on a crowded bus you may be admonished to give the "baby-mother" a seat. However, in this case no judgement is being made about her marital status and literally means "the mother of the child".

Jacki-O

Angela Kohn (born November 24, 1975), better known as Jacki-O, is an American rapper from Miami, Florida, who is currently signed to her own label Jack Movement Entertainment. She got her first break in 2003 with the bawdy sex rap "Nookie" which garnered the MC comparisons to fellow Southern rapper Trina. Although it was the first time that many had heard of Jacki-O, she kept a high profile, prior to her radio and club successes, with several appearances on Miami-area mixtapes. The success of "Nookie" led Jacki-O to discuss a similar subject matter on her second single, "Sugar Walls," released in 2004 in anticipation of her debut album, Poe Little Rich Girl. Jackie-O has also worked with WWE & Jim Johnston in producing vocals for some of their theme songs, including Michelle McCool, Candice Michelle & Stephanie McMahon.

In 2002, Jacki teamed up with Poe Boy Entertainment to obtain a recording contract; in the process, she released helped established Poe Boy first mixtape, entitled The Official Bootlegg. It went on to sell over 70,000 copies and was downloaded over 200,000 times. Subsequently, she released her first music video, "Nookie", which became her biggest hit to date.

Baby Mama is a 2008 comedy film from Universal Pictures written and directed by Michael McCullers and starring Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Sigourney Weaver, Greg Kinnear, Romany Malco, Dax Shepard and Steve Martin.

Plot

Kate Holbrook (Tina Fey) is a successful single businesswoman who has always put her career before her personal life. Now in her late thirties, she finally decides to have a child of her own but her plans are dampened when she discovers she has a minuscule chance of becoming pregnant due to her uterus being T-shaped. Also denied the chance to adopt, Kate hires an immature, obnoxious South Philly woman named Angie Ostrowski (Amy Poehler) to become a surrogate mother for her.

When Angie becomes pregnant, Kate begins preparing for motherhood in her own typically driven fashion—until her surrogate shows up at her door with no place to live. Their conflicting personalities put them at odds as Kate learns first-hand about balancing motherhood and career and also dates the owner of a local blended juice cafe, Rob Ackerman (Greg Kinnear).

"Baby Mama" is an R&B/hip-hop song by Fantasia from her debut album Free Yourself. It was released as the album's third single on May 3, 2005 and was produced by Co-Stars and Harold Lilly. It performed relatively well on the U.S Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Chart, peaking at number 16. It peaked at number 60 on Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Critical reception

The song is very meaningful to Fantasia because it was written as an anthem to inspire single mothers across the United States to follow their dreams. Fantasia has stated that "Baby Mama" is dedicated to "all of those single moms out there who tough it out to take care of the kids and work two jobs, go to school". Critics have accused the song sending the wrong message about sexual activity and pregnancy to teens. The song takes its title from the slang term baby mama. A parody of the song was made by comedian Rickey Smiley.
