Baldwin (died 1098), was an abbot and physician.

Monk

Baldwin was a monk of St. Denys, and was made prior of the monastery of Liberau, a cell of St. Denys, in Alsace. When Edward the Confessor refounded the monastery of Deerhurst and gave it to St. Denys, Baldwin was appointed prior of this new possession of his house. He was well skilled in medicine, and became the king's physician.

On the death of Leofstan, abbot of St. Edmund's, in 1065, Edward caused the monks to elect Baldwin as his successor. The new abbot received the benediction at Windsor, in the presence of the king, from the Archbishop of Canterbury, for his house claimed to be exempt from the jurisdiction of the bishop of Elmham, in whose diocese it lay. The king further showed his regard for the new abbot by granting him the privilege of a mint.

Baldwin is a village in St. Croix County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,957 at the 2010 census, a growth rate of 48% from 2000. The village is located partially within the Town of Baldwin.

Geography

Baldwin is located at 44°57′51″N 92°22′23″W / 44.96417°N 92.37306°W / 44.96417; -92.37306 (44.964401, -92.373251).

It is 30 miles (48 km) east of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and 40 miles (64 km) west of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.91 square miles (7.54 km²), all of it land.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,957 people, 1,572 households, and 1,006 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,359.8 inhabitants per square mile (525.0/km²). There were 1,724 housing units at an average density of 592.4 per square mile (228.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.0% White, 0.9% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.6% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.6% of the population.
