BMW N20

The BMW N20 is a turbocharged straight-4 DOHC gasoline piston engine which replaced the N52 and BMW N53 straight-6 engines, and has been in production since 2011-present.

The N20 features a twin-scroll turbocharger, variable valve timing (called VANOS by BMW), variable valve lift (called valvetronic by BMW) and direct injection. The N20 is sold alongside the smaller displacement BMW N13 turbocharged straight-4 engine.

While the N20 is a straight-4, it is considered a replacement for the naturally-aspirated straight-6 N52 and N53 because it powers equivalent models, producing similar horsepower to its straight-6 predecessors with greater lower-end torque and better efficiency.

The N20 was placed in Wards Top 10 Engines in 2012.
