Konami Code

The Konami Code (Japanese: コナミコマンド, Konami komando, "Konami command") is a cheat code that appears in many Konami video games, although the code also appears in some non-Konami games.

During the title screen before the game demo begins, the player could press the following sequence of buttons on the game controller to enable the cheat:

The code has also found a place in popular culture as a reference to the third generation of video game consoles. The code is also present as an Easter egg on a number of websites.

History

The code was first used in the 1986 release of Gradius for the NES but was popularized among North American players in the NES version of Contra, for which it was also dubbed both the "Contra Code" and "30 Lives Code".

The Konami Code was created by Kazuhisa Hashimoto, who was developing the home port of the 1985 arcade game Gradius, a scrolling shooter released on the NES in 1986. Finding the game too difficult to play through during testing, he created a cheat code to give the player a full set of power-ups (normally attained gradually throughout the game). The code was still present in the released Gradius after Hashimoto forgot to remove it. Players discovered and shared the code via word of mouth.

Boston and Albany Railroad

The Boston and Albany Railroad (reporting mark B&A) was a railroad connecting Boston, Massachusetts to Albany, New York, later becoming part of the New York Central Railroad system, Conrail and CSX. The line is used by CSX for freight. Passenger service is still operated on the line by Amtrak (as part of their Lake Shore Limited service), and the MBTA Commuter Rail system, which owns and uses the section east of Worcester as their Framingham/Worcester Line.

History

The Boston and Worcester Railroad was chartered June 23, 1831 and construction began in August 1832. The line opened in sections: to West Newton on April 16, 1834; to Wellesley on July 3; to Ashland on September 20; to Westborough in November 1834; and the full length to Worcester on July 4, 1835. The originally single-track line was doubled-tracked from Boston to Framingham in 1839, and on to Worcester by 1843. In 1843 the B&W introduced season passes to West Newton for $60, effectively introducing the concept of commuter rail.

4B5B

In telecommunication, 4B5B is a form of data communications Block Coding. 4B5B maps groups of four bits onto groups of 5 bits, with a minimum density of 1 bits in the output. When NRZI-encoded, the 1 bits provide necessary clock transitions for the receiver. For example, a run of 4 bits such as 0000 contains no transitions and that causes clocking problems for the receiver. 4B/5B solves this problem by assigning each block of 4 consecutive bits an equivalent word of 5 bits. These 5 bit words are pre-determined in a dictionary and they are chosen to ensure that there will be at least two transitions per block of bits.

A collateral effect of the code is that more bits are needed to send the same information than with 4 bits. An alternate to using 4B5B coding is to use a scrambler. Depending on the standard or specification of interest, there may be several 4b5b characters left unused. The presence of any of the "unused" characters in the data stream can be used as an indication that there is a fault somewhere in the link. Therefore, the unused characters can actually be used to detect errors in the data stream.

List of Kill Bill characters

The following is a list of characters from the film Kill Bill. Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, the film was released in two separate parts, Kill Bill: Volume 1 in 2003 and Kill Bill: Volume 2 in 2004. The film takes place after a massacre that killed the fiancé and friends of the main character, The Bride, at the chapel in which she was to be married; she was also thought to have been killed by being shot in the head. However, The Bride survived, but was put into a coma for four years as a result of the attack. Upon finally awakening she plots her vengeance against the killers.

Beatrix Kiddo, a.k.a. The Bride (portrayed by Uma Thurman), is the protagonist of the film. She abandons her life as a hired assassin for the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad (DVAS) upon realizing she is pregnant with Bill's child, denying him the right of fatherhood to preserve her unborn's future. This action provokes the attacks on her and her loved ones and its ensuing revenge, which is the entire basis of the film. Her code name while working for DVAS was Black Mamba.
