Ayer (MBTA station)

Ayer is a passenger rail station on the MBTA Commuter Rail Fitchburg Line in the downtown area of Ayer, Massachusetts. The station is located at 70 Main Street in the Ayer Main Street Historic District. There are three tracks through the station, two of which are served by a pair of low-level side platforms, which are not handicapped-accessible. There is a shelter on the inbound platform.

Ayer has been a major railroad interchange since the Fitchburg Railroad opened in 1845. By 1900, the town was served by five railroads, with service to Boston, Worcester, and Lowell plus New York, New Hampshire, and Maine. Although passenger service now runs only on the Fitchburg Line, Pan Am Railways runs freight trains through the town to various destinations. Ayer has seen continuous passenger service since 1845, except for 1975-1980 and a brief period in 1965.

History

Railroad construction

The Fitchburg Railroad main line opened on an east-west alignment through Ayer in December 1845, with an Ayer stop near the modern location. The Stony Brook Railroad opened from Ayer to North Chelmsford with service to Lowell in July 1848; it ran parallel to the Fitchburg for several miles east of downtown Ayer before branching to the northeast at Stony Brook Junction. Located at the junction, Willows station (also known as Sandy Pond) was the only other train station in Ayer and served both the Stony Brook and the Fitchburg.

Ayer, Switzerland

Ayer is a village in the district of Sierre in the Swiss canton of Valais. An independent municipality before, it merged on 1 January 2009 with neighboring Chandolin, Grimentz, Saint Jean, Saint-Luc and Vissoie to form the municipality of Anniviers.

Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks French (513 or 90.0%) as their first language, German is the second most common (27 or 4.7%) and Serbo-Croatian is the third (9 or 1.6%). There are 8 people who speak Italian and 1 person who speaks Romansh.

There were 106 or 18.6% who were born in the same canton, while 92 or 16.1% were born somewhere else in Switzerland, and 95 or 16.7% were born outside of Switzerland.As of 2000, there were 209 people who were single and never married in the village. There were 295 married individuals, 28 widows or widowers and 38 individuals who are divorced.
