(神名 綾人 Kamina Ayato)
Japanese voice actor: Hiro Shimono
English voice actor: Chris Patton
First appearance: Episode 1
At the beginning of the series, Ayato Kamina is a student and artist living with his mother in Tokyo. Most of his artwork shown in the series consists of drawings or paintings of a girl on a cliff looking towards the sea. He has birthmark-like symbols on his belly resembling runes, which are revealed to be a sign of his being a potential instrumentalist for the RahXephon.
After being taken from Tokyo by Haruka and the RahXephon, Ayato moves in with Rikudo Shougo, Haruka's uncle on Nirai Kanai. At first, this arrangement does not sit well with Ayato, as Haruka and her younger sister Megumi live in Rikudo's annex, but they slowly adapt to each other's presences. As a stranger from Tokyo Jupiter, Ayato struggles to find his place and acceptance in the outside world. Although he pilots the RahXephon in defending Nirai Kanai, he questions his abilities and self-worth. He also struggles with trying to piece together and understand his relationship with Haruka, handling the feisty Megumi, and interacting with the other TERRA personnel, who regard him with a broad spectrum of reactions, from acceptance and friendship to cool scientific interest to distrust and even contempt.

The Belgian Armed Forces established a large military base in Kamina after the Second World War. The large base complex consisted of Base 1, an air base used for flying training, and Base 2, a paratroop training facility. From September 1953 to 1960, the Advanced Pilots' School of the Belgian Air Force operated some 60 North American Harvards from the base.
This is a list of primary characters from the anime series Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Most of them are people who became the first members of Kamina's Team Gurren. The plot of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is divided into two main story arcs, separated by a seven-year timeskip. After the timeskip, most characters pass through important changes in their appearances and/or personalities, and some of them have their own unique roles in the overall story.

Personal Gunmen
The series protagonist, Simon (pronounced as See-mon) originally started off as a boy in the beginning of the story who suffered a low self-esteem due to his lack of parents and fear of earthquakes. Though physically underdeveloped for his age and ignored by adults and snubbed by girls, Simon is a valued digger in Giha Village. Simon is eventually befriended by Kamina, whose inspirational speeches start to give him enough confidence to muster his courage and take action in bouts of intense determination. Finding Lagann during his dig, Simon joins Kamina in going to the surface where he develops a crush on Yoko before learning she has feelings for Kamina. When Kamina died during the formation of Team Dai-Gurren, Simon is thrown into a maddened and pervasive depression, driving him to be overly aggressive in combat while isolating himself among the Team. But Simon's meeting with Nia helps him come to a revelation about his own nature, leading to him discarding his fears and doubts as he takes over Kamina's role as Team Dai-Gurren's leader.
