Awakening!!

Awakening!! is an album by saxophonist Jimmy Woods which was recorded in late 1961 and early 1962 and released on the Contemporary label.

Reception

Allmusic awarded the album 4½ stars with its review by Scott Yanow stating: "Jimmy Woods' original sound and passionate, chance-taking style make one wonder why he was never able to really make it; his music has not really dated".

Stargate Universe (season 2)

The second and final season of Stargate Universe was announced by Syfy on December 13, 2009. Like the first season, the second season consisted of 20 episodes. The series was moved from the franchise's long history of Friday to Tuesday, along with Caprica, as Syfy had picked up WWE Friday Night SmackDown. The series resumed on September 28, 2010, USA. In Ireland & UK, the series resumed on October 5 at 9pm on Sky1 and Sky1 HD.

Syfy announced on December 16, 2010 that it would not be picking Stargate Universe up for a third season and that the Spring 2011 season would be the last to air on its channel.

Awakening is the third full-length studio release from drummer/songwriter/producer Narada Michael Walden. It was the first of two 1979 releases for the artist and featured him (once again) writing all the songs, though he co-produced each track with someone else.

Isolate (puzzle)

Isolate is a logic-based line-placement puzzle. The puzzler is provided with a grid containing walls, dots and a set of area sizes. A solved grid will contain areas of the given sizes containing two dots each.

The puzzle was invented by an English puzzle enthusiast, Laurence May, in 2007. It is produced by Vexus Puzzle Design and appears daily along with Sudoku and Kakuro in the Daily Mail.

Rules

The Isolate grid must be partitioned into areas so that each area contains two dotted squares. Area sizes must match those shown below the grid and each + sign must be linked to at least two walls.

Pit of despair

The pit of despair was a name used by American comparative psychologist Harry Harlow for a device he designed, technically called a vertical chamber apparatus, that he used in experiments on rhesus macaque monkeys at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the 1970s. The aim of the research was to produce an animal model of clinical depression. Researcher Stephen Suomi described the device as "little more than a stainless-steel trough with sides that sloped to a rounded bottom":

Harlow had already placed newly born monkeys in isolation chambers for up to one year. With the pit of despair, he placed monkeys between three months and three years old in the chamber alone, after they had bonded with their mothers, for up to ten weeks. Within a few days, they had stopped moving about and remained huddled in a corner.

Background

Much of Harlow's scientific career was spent studying maternal bonding, what he described as the "nature of love". These experiments involved rearing newborn monkeys with surrogate mothers, ranging from toweling-covered cones to a machine that modeled abusive mothers by assaulting the baby monkeys with cold air or spikes. The point of the experiments was to pinpoint the basis of the mother-child relationship, namely whether the infant primarily sought food or affection. Harlow concluded it was the latter.
