Aux-send

An aux-send (auxiliary send) is an electronic signal-routing output used on multi-channel sound mixing consoles used in recording and broadcasting settings and on PA system amplifier-mixers used in music concerts. The signal from the auxiliary send is often routed through outboard audio processing effects units (e.g., reverb) and then returned to the mixer using an auxiliary return input jack, thus creating an effects loop. This allows effects to be added to an audio source or channel within the mixing console.

Purpose

The routing configuration and usage of an aux-send will vary depending on the application.

Two types of aux-sends commonly exist: Pre-fader and post-fader. Pre-fade sends are not affected by the main slider for the channel, while post-fade ones are.

In a common configuration, a post-fade aux-send output is connected to the audio input of an outboard audio effects unit (most commonly a temporal effect such as reverb or delay [compressors and other dynamic processors would normally be on an insert instead]). The audio output of the outboard unit is then connected to the aux-return input on the mixing console (if the recording console has one) or as an alternative it can be looped back to one of the input channels on the mixing console. Mixing consoles most commonly have a group of aux-send knobs in each channel strip, where one knob corresponds to each aux-send on the board. The controls enable the operator to adjust the amount of signal that will be sent from its corresponding channel into the signal bus routed to its corresponding aux-send output. The reason that a post-fade is used is to avoid channels than are zero gain on the sliders from contaminating the effects return loop.

Aux (TV channel)

Aux (stylized as AUX) is a Canadian English language Category B specialty channel and corresponding website owned and operated by Blue Ant Media. Aux is programmed to offer music video and music-related programs profiling new and emerging artists in alternative, hip hop, indie rock, indie pop and other genres.

History

Aux originally started out as a website, built on an Internet television model, and a programming block on another Glassbox-owned television channel, BiteTV (which became Makeful in August 2015). Both the website and the programming block launched on November 24, 2008.

Glassbox Television received approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to launch Aux as a national English-language category 2 specialty channel on March 6, 2009. The channel was launched on October 1, 2009 exclusively on Rogers Cable (in Ontario and New Brunswick, and shortly thereafter in Newfoundland and Labrador). Later, other providers such as Shaw Cable, Shaw Direct, EastLink, and Source Cable launched the channel on their systems.

DOS

DOS /dɒs/, short for disk operating system, is an acronym for several computer operating systems that were operated by using the command line.

MS-DOS dominated the IBM PC compatible market between 1981 and 1995, or until about 2000 including the partially MS-DOS-based Microsoft Windows (95, 98, and Millennium Edition). "DOS" is used to describe the family of several very similar command-line systems, including MS-DOS, PC DOS, DR-DOS, FreeDOS, ROM-DOS, and PTS-DOS.

In spite of the common usage, none of these systems were simply named "DOS" (a name given only to an unrelated IBM mainframe operating system in the 1960s). A number of unrelated, non-x86 microcomputer disk operating systems had "DOS" in their names, and are often referred to simply as "DOS" when discussing machines that use them (e.g. AmigaDOS, AMSDOS, ANDOS, Apple DOS, Atari DOS, Commodore DOS, CSI-DOS, ProDOS, and TRSDOS). While providing many of the same operating system functions for their respective computer systems, programs running under any one of these operating systems would not run under others.

Gospel for Asia

Gospel for Asia (GFA) is a large Christian missionary NGO founded by K. P. Yohannan in 1978, focused on spreading the Gospel to India and Asian countries through the use of national missionaries. The organization, based in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex suburb of Carrollton, Texas, states that its primary aim is to support indigenous missions to "share the Good News of Jesus Christ with lost men, women and children throughout South Asia"

GFA is present in numerous countries, including India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Laos and Thailand.

Scholar Michael Bergunder considers it "one of the most influential missionary organizations in the second half of the 20th century".

History

In 1981, its current president, K. P. Yohannan formed a branch of GFA in his native Kerala, with an Indian headquarters being set up in Tiruvalla in 1983. It is active throughout India, especially in the North, and directly administers bible colleges, whose graduates receive financial support to found new congregations. Increasing donations made GFA "one of the most financially powerful mission undertakings in India in the 1980s." GFA directly supports more than 50 Bible colleges in various countries.

HM Prison Send

HM Prison Send is a closed category women's prison in the extreme south of Ripley nearer Send in Surrey, England. Its post town is Woking. The prison is operated by Her Majesty's Prison Service.

History

A smallpox isolation hospital on its site became a prison in 1962 when it opened as a Junior Detention Centre. It remained as such until 1987 when it was re-classified as a Category C Adult Male Training Prison. Send was demolished and completely rebuilt by 1999, opening as a closed Female Training Prison.

In August 2005, a report by the Independent Monitoring Board criticised a marked increase in self-harm and suicide amongst inmates and lack of staff, whereas it praised the prison's education provision and its farms and gardens scheme.

The prison today

Send is a closed prison for adult females. In addition it also houses a 20 bed Addictive Treatment Unit, an 80 bed Resettlement Unit and a 40 bed Therapeutic Community.

HMP Sends Education Department runs Key Skills courses and NVQs in Business Administration. The Farms and Gardens department offers Floristry NVQs, and the Works Department run an industrial workshop and painting party. Prisoners held in the Resettlement Unit can also do voluntary work, attend College courses and Work Placements in the outside community.
