With nine subway services, this station is second to the Times Square – 42nd Street / Port Authority Bus Terminal complex in offering the most transfers to other services.

As of 2015, it is the busiest subway station in Brooklyn, with 13,617,153 passengers, and is ranked 21st overall. The control house has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980, while the station complex as a whole has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2004, and is ADA-compliant.

History

The station was overhauled in the late 1970s. MTA fixed the station's structure and overhauled its appearance. It refurbished the wall tilings and replaced the old signs and incandescent lighting with modern fixtures. It also fixed the staircases and platform edges. The Pacific Street section underwent another major overhaul from 1999 to 2000. This time the station received state of the art repairs and was updated for ADA-accessibility. The MTA repaired the staircases, re-tiled the walls and floors, upgraded the station's lights and the public address system, installed ADA yellow safety threads along the platform edge, and installed new trackbeds for local and express trains entering the station. In late 2004, the MTA installed elevators on both sides of the platform and street level to accommodate wheelchairs and those with disabilities.

Atlantic Boulevard (Los Angeles County)

Atlantic Boulevard/Atlantic Avenue is a major north-south thoroughfare in eastern Los Angeles County, California.

Route

The street passes through the cities of Alhambra, Monterey Park, East Los Angeles, Eastside Los Angeles, Commerce, Vernon, Maywood, Bell, Cudahy, South Gate, Lynwood, Compton, and Long Beach.

Atlantic Boulevard starts off as a southerly continuation of Los Robles Avenue at Huntington Drive in northern Alhambra, and ends on East Ocean Boulevard in Downtown Long Beach.Through most of its route from Maywood south, Atlantic travels parallel to the Long Beach Freeway and the Los Angeles River. South of Randolph Street, Atlantic Boulevard becomes Atlantic Avenue, roughly at the city border of Maywood and Bell.

List of lettered Brooklyn avenues

This article provides details of the lettered avenues in the flat south central portion of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Improved public transport brought urban sprawl to this area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, after the hilly areas to its west and north had already been developed. The avenues are oriented east to west and unless specified have two traffic lanes, carrying two-way traffic. Route descriptions are given west to east.

Much of Brooklyn has only named streets, but in this portion of Brooklyn, lettered avenues (like Avenue M) east of Dahill Road run east and west, forming a perpendicular grid with numbered streets that have the prefix "East". South of Avenue O, related perpendicular numbered streets west of Dahill Road use the "West" designation. This set of numbered streets ranges from West 37th Street to East 108th Street, and the avenues range from A-Z with names substituted for some of them in some neighborhoods, notably Albemarle Road, Beverley Road, Cortelyou Road, Dorchester Road, Ditmas Avenue, Foster Avenue, Farragut Road, Glenwood Road and Quentin Road.

Avenue M (BMT Brighton Line)

Avenue M (formerly South Greenfield,Elm Avenue), is a local station on the BMT Brighton Line of the New York City Subway. It is located in Midwood, Brooklyn, at Avenue M between East 15th and East 16th Streets. It is served by the Q train at all times.

History

The station originated as the South Greenfield grade station of the Brooklyn, Flatbush and Coney Island Railroad (BF&CI). The line opened in 1878, and South Greenfield was one of the original stations. Through a series of bankruptcies, buyouts, and mergers, the BF&CI became the Brooklyn and Brighton Beach Railroad (B&BB, 1887), Brooklyn Rapid Transit (BRT, 1900), Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit (BMT, 1923), New York City Rapid Transit (1940), New York City Transit Authority (1953), and the Metropolitan Transit Authority (1968). Through all the ownership and management changes, station name changes, and reconstruction of this portion of the line from grade to elevated embankment, the station was never shut, and has been in near-continuous operation for close to 150 years. However, the present structure was only built when the line was elevated onto the embankment, between 1903 and 1907.
