The Door (novel)

The Door is a novel by Hungarian writer Magda Szabó (1917–2007). The novel concerns the developing relationship between a young Hungarian writer and her housecleaner, and is partly autobiographical.

The Door was originally published in Hungary in 1987, and translated into English in 1995 by Stefan Draughon for American publication, and again in 2005 by Len Rix for British publication. Rix's translation won the 2006 Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize, and was short-listed for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize. Rix's translation was republished in 2015 by New York Review Books Classics.

A film based on the novel, directed by István Szabó, was released in March 2012.

A childless woman writer, Magda, hires an older housekeeper, Emerence, who behaves oddly, but eventually they develop a kind of friendship.

The Door was a two-part celebrity series broadcast on the ITV Network in the United Kingdom and hosted by Amanda Holden and Chris Tarrant. Keith Duffy and Dean Gaffney made it to the final with Keith winning the show with Dean as the runner-up.

Lloyd Biggle, Jr.

Lloyd Biggle, Jr. (April 17, 1923 – September 12, 2002), was a musician, author, and internationally known oral historian.

Biography

Biggle was born in 1923 in Waterloo, Iowa. He served in World War II as a communications sergeant in a rifle company of the 102nd Infantry Division; during the war, he was wounded twice. His second wound, a shrapnel wound in his leg received near the Elbe River at the end of the war, left him disabled for life.

After the war, Biggle resumed his education. He received an A.B. Degree with High Distinction from Wayne State University and M.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. Biggle taught at the University of Michigan and at Eastern Michigan University in the 1950s. He began writing professionally in 1955 and became a full-time writer with the publication of his novel, All the Colors of Darkness in 1963; he continued in the writing profession until his death.

Career

Both Biggle's science fiction and mystery stories have received international acclaim being nominated for the 1962 Hugo for short fiction, and also nominated for the Locus Readers awards in 1972, 1973, and 1974. He was celebrated in science fiction circles as the author who introduced aesthetics into a literature known for its scientific and technological complications. His stories frequently used musical and artistic themes. Such notables as songwriter Jimmy Webb and novelist Orson Scott Card have written of the tremendous effect that his early story, "The Tunesmith", had on them in their youth. Among Biggle's enduring science fiction creations were the Interplanetary Relations Bureau and the Cultural Survey, both featured in novels and magazine stories.

Door

A door is a moving structure used to block off, and allow access to, an entrance to or within an enclosed space, such as a building or vehicle. Similar exterior structures are called gates. Typically, doors have an interior side that faces the inside of a space and an exterior side that faces the outside of that space. While in some cases the interior side of a door may match its exterior side, in other cases there are sharp contrasts between the two sides, such as in the case of the vehicle door. Doors normally consist of a panel that swings on hinges or that slides or spins inside of a space.

When open, doors admit people, animals, ventilation or light. The door is used to control the physical atmosphere within a space by enclosing the air drafts, so that interiors may be more effectively heated or cooled. Doors are significant in preventing the spread of fire. They also act as a barrier to noise. Many doors are equipped with locking mechanisms to allow entrance to certain people and keep out others. As a form of courtesy and civility, people often knock before opening a door and entering a room.

Simeon Gottfried Albert Doorenbos

Simon Godfried Albert Doorenbos (7 October 1891, Barneveld – 1980) was a Dutch horticulturist best known for his work as Director of The Hague Parks Department from 1927 until his retirement in 1957, with a brief interruption during the Second World War when he was dismissed and evicted by the Nazis for refusing to remove trees and shrubs to facilitate the construction of a V1 flying bomb launch pad.

Doorenbos started his career as a nursery representative in 1915, visiting the UK and USA. His long career was distinguished by the raising of a number of important cultivars, including Symphoricarpos × doorenbosii, Betula utilis 'Doorenbos', and numerous Dahlias. Perhaps his most famous achievement was the hybrid elm cultivar 'Den Haag', indeed it has been postulated that he was the first to think of crossing elms to obtain varieties resistant to Dutch elm disease. Doorenbos was also responsible for the introduction of the Himalayan Elm Ulmus wallichiana to Europe, cuttings of which he obtained from the Arnold Arboretum in 1929; the species was later to play a major role in the Dutch elm breeding programme.

Synopsis

Summer, 2000. Eleven-year-old Yusuke and his classmates are camping in a woods when suddenly they see a bright light streak over the treetops and into the woods. The boys take off into the woods towards the light. There in the ground, growing, they find a small round metallic object. Just as Yusuke reaches to touch it, the mysterious object up pops a set of eyes and the object says;

"I am Tetra, I meet Yusuke". Startled Yusuke replies "Your name is Tetra? Cool!"

Tetra is kept from adult eyes in Yusuke's closet. Tetra creates wonderful gadgets using "never-seen-before" technology. It would appear Tetra was designed with artificial intelligence. But where did Tetra come from and what is its purpose? As the relationship grows between Yusuke and Tetra, these questions are answered.
