Artemis Networks

Artemis Networks is a wireless technology company responsible for the software-defined radio technologies pCell and pWave. pCell technology is capable of speeds hundreds of times faster than other technologies under conditions of heavy usage and interference. Its founder and CEO is Steve Perlman, who is known for his work in cloud gaming with OnLive, at Apple Inc. on the technology behind QuickTime and founding WebTV.

Artemis has also alluded to possible applications for their technology outside communication.

History

Artemis was founded in stealth in the early 2000s and grew through the Rearden Companies incubator, founded by Perlman.

Chief scientist Antonio Forenza, along with Perlman, released a white paper in 2011 that described what it called Distributed-Input-Distributed-Output, or DIDO, technology. Following this release and an on-camera presentation from Perlman, debate began about the legitimacy of the technology, due to its perceived violation of the Shannon Limit.

Artemis

Artemis (/ˈɑːrtᵻmᵻs/; Ancient Greek: Ἄρτεμις, Ártemis, Greek pronunciation: [ár.te.mis]) was one of the most widely venerated of the Ancient Greek deities. Her Roman equivalent is Diana. Some scholars believe that the name, and indeed the goddess herself, was originally pre-Greek. Homer refers to her as Artemis Agrotera, Potnia Theron: "Artemis of the wildland, Mistress of Animals". The Arcadians believed she was the daughter of Demeter.

In the classical period of Greek mythology, Artemis was often described as the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. She was the Hellenic goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, childbirth, virginity and protector of young girls, bringing and relieving disease in women; she often was depicted as a huntress carrying a bow and arrows. The deer and the cypress were sacred to her. In later Hellenistic times, she even assumed the ancient role of Eileithyia in aiding childbirth.

Etymology

The name Artemis (noun, feminine) is of unknown or uncertain origin and etymology although various ones have been proposed.

Artemiz

Artemiz is a fictional character, and extraterrestrial hunter published by DC Comics. She first appeared in Suicide Squad vol. 1 #35 (November 1989), she was created by John Ostrander and Luke McDonnell.

Fictional character biography

A member of the Female Furies, Granny Goodness' cadre of female warriors, Artemiz is a fierce archer that uses her bow and arrows as a weapon, as well as her cyberpak, Unus, Secondus, and Tertius, a trio of ferocious cybernetic wolves. Artemiz was not one of the original Furies, but rather joined after Lashina was betrayed by Bernadeth and left on Earth. Granny Goodness recruited Artemiz into the Furies to fill the loss. She often bickers with Stompa, but got along well with the other Furies. Her keen senses are often helpful, and the Furies occasionally have her scout the area rather than stay with the team.

During the battle with Suicide Squad, Artemiz battled Nightshade, who defeated her but did not kill her. Granny Goodness, after Nightshade's boasting, told her she should have. Later, she joined the Furies as they battled Supergirl while searching for Twilight.

MV Artania

MV Artania (previously Royal Princess and Artemis) is a cruise ship chartered since 2011 by Phoenix Reisen, a German-based travel agency and cruise ship operator. She was built for Princess Cruises by Wärtsilä at the Helsinki Shipyard, Finland, and was launched on 18 February 1984.

At a ceremony in Southampton, England, on 15 November 1984, the ship was named Royal Princess by Diana, Princess of Wales. After entering service on 19 November 1984, she cruised as Royal Princess until April 2005, when she was transferred to the control of P&O Cruises, and was renamed Artemis. In 2011, she moved to Phoenix Reisen's fleet, under the modified name Artania.

Royal Princess

Royal Princess was named by Diana, Princess of Wales at a ceremony in Southampton, Hampshire on 15 November 1984.

The ceremony was attended by members of the public, employees of the P&O Princess Group and local and international dignitaries including Mauno Koivisto, President of Finland. The Bishop of Southampton performed a blessing prior to the naming.
