Ant (DC Comics)

The Ant is a fictional superhero published by DC Comics. He started out as an opponent of the Teen Titans but ended up as their ally. The Ant first appeared in Teen Titans (vol. 1) #5 (September 1966), and was created by Bob Haney and Nick Cardy.

Fictional character biography

Eddie Whit's parents were a circus strongman and acrobat, and after they die, he becomes a juvenile delinquent. Eddie is sent to Lacklock Camp, a reform school of sorts. After being released, he gains custody of his younger brother Danny and takes a job at Zenith Caterer. The owner of Zenith, Krasko, claims he has proof that Danny is involved in gang-related crimes, and blackmails Eddie into committing burglaries under the costumed guise of the Ant. The Teen Titans are sent in to investigate, and when they learn the details of Eddie's situation they are sympathetic. During a robbery Ant turns against Krasko and helps the Teen Titans put him behind bars. As a reward for his cooperation, the Titans promise Ant that he will not serve a prison sentence, but will only have to spend some more time in Lacklock Camp.

Ant (chair)

The Ant (Danish: Myren)chair is a classic of modern chair design. It was designed in 1952 by Arne Jacobsen for use in the canteen of the Danish pharmaceutical firm Novo Nordisk. The Ant was named for its approximate similarity to the outline of an ant with its head raised.

The chair was designed to be light, stable, easy to stack up, and to minimise tangling the user's feet. The original model had three plastic legs and a seat made from form-moulded laminated veneer; Novo ordered just 300 of them. They were manufactured by Fritz Hansen. The chair has since proved very popular although the plastic in the legs was replaced by tubular steel, and a version with four legs was also made.

Bobâlna (Olpret until 1957; Hungarian: Alparét; German: Krautfeld) is a commune in Cluj County, Romania, having a population of 1,888. It is composed of eleven villages: Antăş (Antos), Băbdiu (Zápróc), Blidăreşti (Tálosfalva), Bobâlna, Cremenea (Keménye), Maia (Mánya), Oşorhel (Erdővásárhely), Pruni (Nagymező), Răzbuneni (Radákszinye), Suarăş (Szóváros) and Vâlcelele (Bujdos).

The first document that mentions the village is from 1332. This village was the place where the 15th century Bobâlna revolt started.

According to the census from 2002 there was a total population of 1,888 people living in this town. Of this population, 99.76% are ethnic Romanians, 1.85% ethnic Romani and 1.37% are ethnic Hungarians.

Army

An army (from Latin arma "arms, weapons" via Old French armée, "armed" (feminine)) or ground force is a fighting force that fights primarily on land. In the broadest sense, it is the land-based military branch, service branch or armed service of a nation or state. It may also include other branches of the military such as the air force via means of aviation corps. Within a national military force, the word army may also mean a field army. They differ from army reserves who are activated only during such times as war or natural disasters.

In several countries, the army is officially called the Land Army to differentiate it from an air force called the Air Army, notably France. In such countries, the word "army" on its own retains its connotation of a land force in common usage. The current largest army in the world, by number of active troops, is the People's Liberation Army of China with 2,250,000 active troops and 800,000 reserve personnel followed by the Indian Army with 1,129,000 active troops and 2,142,900 reserve personnel.

Army (Ellie Goulding song)

"Army" is a song by English singer and songwriter Ellie Goulding from her third studio album, Delirium (2015). The song was released on 9 January 2016 as the album's second single.

Composition

"Army" is written in the key of B major with a tempo of 87 beats per minute. Goulding's vocals span from B₃ to B₄. The song was written about Goulding's best friend.

Music video

The music video for "Army" was directed by Conor McDonnell and premiered on 14 January 2016. Shot in black and white, the video features Goulding having fun with friends in several settings, as well as performing the song live.

Army (1944 film)

Army (陸軍 Rikugun) is a 1944 Japanese film directed by Keisuke Kinoshita and starring Chishū Ryū and Kinuyo Tanaka. It is best known for its final scene, which Japanese wartime censors found troubling.

Army tells the story of three generations of a Japanese family and their relationship with the army from the Meiji era through the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. Ryu plays the man of the middle generation, Tomohiko, and Tanaka his wife Waka. A large portion of the movie concerns Ryu's and Tanaka's concern that their oldest son Shintaro will be too weak to become a good soldier and their efforts to mold him into one. Other portions of the movie include Tomohiko's own exclusion from fighting during the Russo-Japanese War due to illness, and his later indignation when a friend suggests that Japan could lose a war.

In the wordless final scene of the movie, Shintaro marches off with the army for deployment in the invasion of Manchuria. Tanaka's character runs alongside him tearfully and expresses her anxiety over his well-being. Japanese wartime censors were upset by this scene because Japanese mothers in films were supposed be depicted as being proud to send their sons to battle, and not being at all upset about it. According to film critic Donald Richie, the scene was spared being cut because arguably Tanaka's emotions were caused by her internal conflict between her duty to be happy to send her son off to war and her own selfishness by loving and trying to possess him.Criterion Collection essayist Michael Koresky and others attribute the fact that the script escaped censorship of this scene to the fact that the scene is wordless, and so in the script it merely states "The mother sees the son off at the station.” Koresky attributes the scene's power to purely cinematic elements, i.e., "expressive cutting, the variations in camera distance, Tanaka’s stunning performance."
