Arkaim
Arkaim (Russian: Аркаим) is an archaeological site situated in the Southern Urals steppe, 8.2 kilometres (5.1 mi) north-to-northwest of the village of Amurskiy and 2.3 km (1.4 mi) south-to-southeast of the village of Alexandrovskiy, in the Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, just to the north from the Kazakhstan border.
The site is generally dated to the 17th century BC. Earlier dates, up to the 20th century BC, have been proposed. It was a settlement of the Sintashta-Petrovka culture.
Discovery and excavation
The site was discovered in 1987 by a team of Chelyabinsk scientists who were preparing the area to be flooded in order to create a reservoir, and examined in rescue excavations led by Gennadii Zdanovich. At first their findings were ignored by Soviet authorities, who planned to flood the site as they had flooded Sarkel earlier, but the attention attracted by news of the discovery forced the Soviet government to revoke its plans for flooding the area. It was designated a cultural reservation in 1991, and in May 2005 the site was visited by President Vladimir Putin.
Arkaim (airline)
Arkaim, LLC (Russian: ООО "Аркаим", Bashkir: "Арҡайым" ЯCЙ) is regional Russian airline based in Ufa, Bashkortostan. As of July 2010, it performs regional passenger flights from Ufa to Ekaterinburg (Koltsovo Airport), Nizhniy Novgorod (Strigino Airport) and Sibay, a town in SE Bashkortostan. In the future, the airline also plans to operate a flight to Neftekamsk, another regional town in Bashkortostan.
It plans to lease or purchase 7 Boeing or Airbus aircraft.
History
The company, named after Arkaim, an ancient settlement in the South Urals, was registered on 19 April 2009 by former deputy general director of Ufa International Airport Nikolay Ogedov with registered capital of 10 thousand rubles. Until 2002, Ogedov was general director of BAL Bashkirian Airlines, but was forced to resign in the aftermath of the midair collision of a BAL Tu-154 over Germany. A decree on the development of the air transport industry for 2009 –2020 signed by the President of Bashkortostan in May 2009 allocated some 30 billion rubles for investment in the industry, with 5 billion rubles being earmarked for the creation of the airline, which according to Salavat Kutushev, the General Director of Ufa International Airport, will create 700 jobs.
