Arizona Daily Star

The Arizona Daily Star is the major morning daily newspaper that serves Tucson and surrounding districts of southern Arizona in the United States. The paper was purchased by Pulitzer in 1971; Lee Enterprises bought Pulitzer in 2005.

The Star was in a joint operating agreement with the Tucson Citizen, a smaller paper owned by Gannett (and was Tucson's afternoon paper six days per week, except Sunday, when the Star published Tucson's only Sunday paper), until that paper became online only. The two newspapers, under TNI Partners, shared business and production operations but maintained separate newsrooms and editorial staffs.

In 1981, Star reporters Clark Hallas and Robert B. Lowe won a Pulitzer Prize for their stories about recruiting violations by University of Arizona football coach Tony Mason.

In 2012, the newspaper ran a popular series called "100 Days of Science" by reporter Tom Beal. It was later turned into an ebook. Other popular series run in the Star are "Tucson Oddity", "Street Smarts", "Tucson in 100 Objects" and "Mine Tales". The Star currently does not have a bureau in the state capital, Phoenix, and instead relies on an outside news service.

Daily Star (DC Comics)

The Daily Star was a fictional broadsheet newspaper that appeared in Superman stories published by DC Comics between 1938 and 1986. The Daily Star was based in Metropolis and employed Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen; its chief editor was George Taylor.

In the comics, the newspaper was located in the heart of Metropolis. The Daily Star building's most distinguishing feature was the enormous star that sat on top of the building.

Fictional history

Superman co-creator Joe Shuster named the Daily Star after the Toronto Daily Star in Ontario, which had been the newspaper that Shuster's parents received and for which Shuster had worked as a paperboy. (Called the Evening Star prior to 1899, the Toronto Daily Star is now known simply as the Toronto Star.)

"I have very fond memories of the Toronto Star," Shuster told Star reporter Henry Mietkiewicz for a story that ran on April 26, 1992, three months before Shuster died in Los Angeles. "I still remember drawing one of the earliest panels that showed the newspaper building. We needed a name, and I spontaneously remembered the Toronto Star. So that's the way I lettered it. I decided to do it that way on the spur of the moment, because the Star was such a great influence on my life."

Daily News Egypt

Daily News Egypt (DNE) is an English-language daily Egyptian newspaper established in 2005 and relaunched in June 2012. Under former owner Egyptian Media Services, it was distributed with the International Herald Tribune as a supplement. According to its website, the paper carries “business, political and cultural news and analysis”. The newspaper has claimed to be independent and not subject to government censorship.

History

Egyptian Media Services closed Daily News Egypt after publishing the 20-21 April 2012 issue. All content was produced by an Egyptian editorial team. Rania Al Malky was the last editor-in-chief of DNE, a position she has held since May 2007 after being promoted from the position of deputy editor she held when she joined the team in December 2006. She succeeded Firas Al Atraqchi, who was editor from October 2006 to April 2007 and who had joined following the departure of the first editor Amr Gamal, who held the position from August 2005 to October 2006. Last deputy editor was Sarah El Sirgany, business editor Amira Ahmed, features editor Dalia Rabie, arts and culture editor Joseph Fahim and lifestyle editor Heba Elkayal. The paper included contributions by a large network of freelancers based in Cairo.

The Arizona Department (1863−1865) was a department of the Second Mexican Empire, located in the present day state of Sonora in Northwestern Mexico.

It was directly south of the U.S. Arizona Territory, the present day state of Arizona.

Arizona (1913 film)

Arizona was a 1913 silent film western feature directed by Augustus Thomas based on his famous play Arizona. It is one of the first feature films made in the United States, alongside Cleopatra and Richard III. Cyril Scott plays the lead Lt. Denton.

This film is now lost.

Arizona (band)

Arizona was a Eurodance project from England that consisted of remixer/producers Michael Gray and Jon Pearn (both of Full Intention) and vocalist Zeeteah Massiah (born 24 December 1960 in Barbados). Their 1993 club music release "Slide on The Rhythm" (credited to Arizona featuring Zeitia) went to #1 on Billboard 's Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. In March 1994, "I Specialize In Love" was released and reached #74 in the UK Singles Chart.

NB: They are not to be confused with another funk and soul band of the same name, who recorded an eponymous album for RCA in 1977.
