Arisia is a Boston-area, volunteer run science fiction convention, named for a planet in the Lensman novels by E. E. "Doc" Smith. The name was chosen in response to an older Boston-area con, Boskone, which took the typical ending for a convention—con—and then altered the spelling to match the name of an organization in the Lensmen books.
Arisia was first held in 1990, and its attendance has grown from 842 to over 4000. Arisias 2007–2010 were held at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge, MA. Starting with Arisia 2011 the Convention is at the Westin Boston Waterfront in Boston, MA.
Regular events include one of the largest Masquerades (costume contests) on the East Coast; "Fast Track" programming for children; a demonstration of historical fighting techniques; gaming; and film, video, and anime rooms. Other events that have been recently included are a blood drive, a drumming circle, Friday and Saturday evening dances, and live radio dramas.
The Arisia Corporation is the body that funds and promotes the annual Arisia convention; additional activities include awarding grants to other related organizations. Membership costs $24 per year starting in September, pro-rated for members who join during later months. Corporate positions are elected by the voting body (defined as members who have attended one previous corporate meeting) in September. Meetings are held monthly, held mostly at MIT or at the NESFA Clubhouse in Somerville, and are open to the public.
Arisia Rrab is a fictional character, a superhero featured in comic books published by DC Comics. Arisia is a humanoid alien with golden-yellow skin, hair and eyes, and has pointed, elven ears.
Arisia is named after the planet Arisia in the Lensman novels by E.E. Smith. Along with Eddore of Tront, she was created by writer Mike W. Barr as a tip of the hat to the groundbreaking series in his Tales of the Green Lantern Corps miniseries in 1981. Her last name is "Barr" spelled backward.
Arisia is originally from the planet Graxos IV. Her father, Fentara, served as the Green Lantern of Sector 2815. In Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps #3, it's revealed that (in a rare occurrence) all of the Green Lanterns preceding her father belong to their lineage as well. After her father meets his demise while serving the Corps, her uncle Blish is the next chosen to serve as the Lantern of her sector. Blish too eventually gives his life serving the Corps and Arisia is selected as his replacement on her next birthday, making her at least the fifth member of the family to serve as a Green Lantern. Originally, Arisia is depicted as assuming the role of Green Lantern while still a teenager.
She won't mind, she's got bills to pay
She won't mind, because I come today
Its feels so wrong to be right
She sits tight, in a different way
Pulls my eyes with the words she say
To be is all that she desired
But they didn't love you in our time
Nobody wants you in your life
Bleed and they'll serve you, alive
Words confessed from a memory
I feel them at last when I sing of what used to be
And I sing along like a choir
If I say goodbye to love will it go away
If I say goodbye to love because its here today
And it feels so strong tonight
For the rest of our lives
Fearing the way that will keep us alive
I put my hands to the sky
Pray for a sign if I believed in a god
We lay with our hearts to the floor
Feel from the ground of the earth keep us warm
I put my hands onto your head
As I
Say goodbye to love
I Say goodbye to love
I Say goodbye to love
I Say goodbye to love
They didn't hold you
I cried
Nobody wants you in your life
