Unity (ISS module)

The Unity connecting module was the first U.S.-built component of the International Space Station. It is cylindrical in shape, with six berthing locations (forward, aft, port, starboard, zenith, and nadir) facilitating connections to other modules. Unity measures 4.57 metres (15.0 ft) in diameter, is 5.47 metres (17.9 ft) long, and was built for NASA by Boeing in a manufacturing facility at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Sometimes referred to as Node 1, Unity was the first of the three connecting modules; the other two are Harmony and Tranquility.

Launch and initial berthing

Unity was carried into orbit as the primary cargo of the Space Shuttle Endeavour on STS-88, the first Space Shuttle mission dedicated to assembly of the station. On December 6, 1998, the STS-88 crew mated the aft berthing port of Unity with the forward hatch of the already orbiting Zarya module. (Zarya was a mixed Russian-US funded and Russian-built component launched earlier aboard a Russian Proton rocket from Baikonur, Kazakhstan.) This was the first connection made between two station modules.

Unity (Star Trek: Voyager)

"Unity" is the 17th episode of the third season of the American science fiction television series Star Trek: Voyager, the 59th episode overall. The episode first aired on the UPN network on February 12, 1997, as part of sweeps week. It was written by producer Kenneth Biller, and is the second episode to be directed by cast member Robert Duncan McNeill. It marked the first appearance of the Borg in Voyager.

Set in the 24th century, the series follows the adventures of the Starfleet and Maquis crew of the starship USS Voyager after they were stranded in the Delta Quadrant far from the rest of the Federation. In this episode, while on an away mission, Chakotay is taken in by a group of former Borg who seek help from the crew of Voyager to reactivate their neural link. The ex-Borg force Chakotay to reactivate a Borg cube (a large Borg spaceship), but, in their new-found "Co-operative", the ex-Borg make the cube self-destruct, saving Voyager.

Biller was influenced by the story of the Tower of Babel in writing the episode, and also considered the dissolution of the Soviet Union to be an influence. The crew re-used the make-up and costumes of the Borg designed for the film Star Trek: First Contact, but sets were not re-used. A new fully computer generated Borg cube was created for "Unity", and the storyline of the episode was intended as a hint to those in the later two-part episode "Scorpion". According to Nielsen ratings, it received a 5.4/8 percent share of the audience on first broadcast. "Unity" was received positively by critics, with praise directed at McNeill's direction as well as Biller's plot.

Arise! (Amebix album)

Arise! is the debut album by the British crust punk band Amebix, released on 14 September 1985 by Alternative Tentacles and reissued on CD and vinyl in 2000 with two bonus tracks recorded in 1987. The band Fear of God is named after the third track.

"The Moor" is based upon "Requiem" by György Ligeti, famously used in the Lunar monolith sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

"Largactyl" is a misspelled version of the proprietary name for the antipsychotic medication chlorpromazine (Largactil). The song was written in response and somewhat in honor to Martin (previous Amebix drummer) for being diagnosed with "paranoid schizophrenia" and being institutionalized without choice by his parents.

Arise (Sepultura album)

Arise is the fourth studio album by Brazilian heavy metal band Sepultura, released in 1991 by Roadrunner Records. Upon its release, the album received top reviews from heavy metal magazines such as Rock Hard, Kerrang! and Metal Forces.Arise is considered Sepultura's finest hour among longtime fans. While the music on Arise was mostly in the same death/thrash style as their previous album, Beneath the Remains, it was clear that the Sepultura sound was acquiring an experimental edge.

The album presented their first incursions with industrial music, hardcore punk and Latin percussion. The tour (1991–1992) that supported the album was the group's longest at that time, totalling 220 shows in 39 different countries. During this trek, the album went gold in Indonesia—the band's first music industry certification. By the tour's end, Arise had achieved platinum sales worldwide.

Production

In August 1990, the band travelled to Florida to work on the album. Scott Burns reprised his role as producer and audio engineer, and now with a major advantage: Sepultura were at his home studio, Morrisound, a studio properly equipped to record their music style. Their label Roadrunner granted a $40,000 budget, which helped explain the album's improved production values. That allowed Igor and Burns, for example, to spend a whole week just testing the drum kit's tunings and experimenting with microphone practice.

Arise (band)

Arise is a Swedish death metal/thrash metal-band from Alingsås. Their name is taken from the Sepultura album of the same name.

History

Arise was founded in 1996 in Alingsås (outside of Gothenburg, Sweden) under another name, but got the name Arise in 1998 when their first demo was released. Their third demo, Abducted Intelligence, was recorded in Los Angered Recordings 2000 by Andy LaRoque, and became "demo recording of the month" in Swedish Close-Up Magazine. In 2001 the band was signed by Spinefarm Records and released their first full-length record, The Godly Work of Art. The same year, the band was nominated to the Swedish Rockbjörnen award. Their second studio album, Kings of the Cloned Generation, was released in 2003, and Spinefarm Records were bought by Universal Records during that time. Their third CD, The Beautiful New World, was recorded and released in 2005.

In December 2005 Patrik Skoglöw and Erik Ljungqvist parted ways with Daniel Bugno and L-G Jonasson due to "musical differences." They were replaced by Patrik Johansson (vocals), Sternberg (guitars), and Kaj (bass guitar).
