Argo Design

Argo Design (styled argo design or argodesign and shortened to argo) is a design consultancy based in Austin, Texas, in the United States. It was co-founded by Mark Gauger and Mark Rolston in 2014, both of whom previously worked at Frog Design Inc. Argo Design has co-developed a mobile commerce and storytelling platform with Wrap Media, a smart home application for the PEQ home automation and security service, and a photograph-sharing application with startup Shoto. Argo has proposed designs for a hospital MagicBand, a drone ambulance to speed up emergency support, a car capable of being divided into two motorcycles, and a human-centered experience for Elon Musk's Hyperloop concept.

Description and history

Argo Design, a design consultancy that has been described as "part incubator, part client agency, and part product development group", was co-founded and self-funded by Mark Gauger and Mark Rolston in 2014. Gauger and Rolston had previously worked for Frog Design Inc., as did Argo's current partners Jared Ficklin (creative technologist) and Kevin McDonald (creative lead), who had served as Frog's principal technologist and principal designer, respectively.As of 2015, Gauger retains his position as Argo's managing partner; Rolston serves as chief creative officer (CCO). Design (UK band)

Design was a British vocal group of the early 1970s and its members were Barry Alexander, Gabrielle Field, Kathy Manuell, Jeff Matthews, John Mulcahy-Morgan and Geoff Ramseyer. Their musical style has been described as folk rock 'with intricate and appealing harmonies and an interesting psychedelic twist' and 'sunshine harmony pop with a light hippy vibe' and is now called sunshine pop. Design released 13 singles and 5 albums in the UK and appeared on more than 50 television shows before they split up in 1976.

Barry Alexander, Jeff Matthews and Geoff Ramseyer all played guitar in addition to singing, while Barry also played keyboards. Gabrielle Field occasionally played tenor recorder.

History

Design was formed as a six-piece vocal group by singer and songwriter Tony Smith while he was working at the BBC in London in December 1968. The group signed a recording contract with Adrian Kerridge at Lansdowne Studios and recorded their first album Design during 1969. This led to a two-album deal with Epic Records in the USA.

Argo

In Greek mythology, Argo (/ˈɑːrɡoʊ/; in Greek: Ἀργώ, meaning 'swift') was the ship on which Jason and the Argonauts sailed from Iolcos to retrieve the Golden Fleece. She was named after her builder, Argus.

Legend

Argo was constructed by the shipwright Argus, and its crew were specially protected by the goddess Hera. The best source for the myth is the Argonautica by Apollonius Rhodius. According to a variety of sources of the legend, Argo was said to have been planned or constructed with the help of Athena. According to other legends she contained in her prow a magical piece of timber from the sacred forest of Dodona, which could speak and render prophecies. After the successful journey, Argo was consecrated to Poseidon in the Isthmus of Corinth. She was then translated into the sky and turned into the constellation of Argo Navis.

Several authors of antiquity (Apollonius Rhodius, Pliny,Philostephanus) discussed the hypothetical shape of the ship. Generally she was imagined like a Greek warship, a galley, and authors hypothesized that she was the first ship of this type that had gone out on a high-sea voyage.

Argo Electric

The Argo Electric Vehicle Company operated in Saginaw, Michigan, USA, from 1912 to 1916. The Argo Electric used a 60 volt system with Westinghouse motors. They claimed to be capable of 20 mph (32 km/h). It had 6 forward and 6 reverse speeds, had 36 x 4 cushion tires and used an 18-inch (457 mm) steering wheel on the left. They were offered in both four- and five-passenger models, with open and closed versions available, and all models used steering wheels. The 110-inch (2,794 mm) wheelbase was the longest of any electric at the time. The Argo Brougham was a 4 passenger car, weighing 3,200 lb (1,451 kg), claimed a range of 75 miles (121 km) per charge using thirty 190 ah, MV Exide batteries.

By 1914 Argo joined with the Broc and Borland Electric vehicle companies to form the American Electric Car Company. Three different models were marketed. In 1916 the Columbia Motors Company purchased the assets of Argo.

Argo was a ship that disappeared in 1814 off the coast of Tasmania. She was a ship of some 150 tons, armed with four guns and having a crew of thirty-two. Constructed at Chittagong, present-day Bangladesh, the ship was registered in Calcutta to Payne & Tyrce.

In 1814 the ship illegally departed Hobart with thirteen or fourteen convicts on board. It was postulated that this was done with the agreement of the master of the ship, John Poor Dixon. At a special commission held on 3 May 1820, the harbour master of Hobart, Captain James Kelly, testified that Argo was never heard of again. It was presumed that she foundered at sea with the loss of all aboard.
