Argentino de Quilmes

Club Atlético Argentino de Quilmes, simply known as Argentino de Quilmes, is an Argentine football club from Quilmes, Buenos Aires. The team currently plays in Primera C, the fourth division of the Argentine football league system.

History

The club was founded on 1 December 1899 by a group of students of Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires, as a reaction against British hegemony in Quilmes Atlético Club, which did not permit Argentine natives to play.

Unlike Quilmes AC, which honored visiting players with the traditional tea, the recently founded club Argentino de Quilmes offered "mate", a traditional infusion drink very popular in Argentina. That originated the nickname which Argentino would be known for.

In 1902 Argentino affiliated to Argentine Football Association and began participating in the domestic championships, making its debut in Primera División in 1912. The team lasted there until 1918 when it was relegated to the second division.

In 1938 Argentino de Quilmes won the Primera B title after defeating its main rival Quilmes Atlético Club, and therefore promoting to Primera División. Nevertheless, during the 1939 season Argentino made its worst campaign ever, obtaining only 4 points over 34 matches played and finishing in the last position. Argentino conceded 148 goals, scoring only 35, being relegated to the second division.

Quilmes

Quilmes (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈkilmes]) is a city in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is the capital of Quilmes Partido (Partido de Quilmes), and has a population of 230,810. It is located 17 km (11 mi) south of the capital of Argentina, the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.

History

The Quilmes were a native tribe who lived in the surroundings of Tucumán. In the 17th century, after repeated attempts by the Spanish invaders to control their lands, the Quilmes were defeated and were forced to settle in a restricted colony (reducción) near Buenos Aires, where the authorities could control them. The settlement was thus established in 1666 as Exaltación de la Santa Cruz de los Kilme. The 1,000 km (621 mi) journey from Tucumán was made on foot, causing hundreds of Quilmes to die in the process. The colony had been abandoned by 1810 and had become a ghost town. The land was divided in parcels and the town of Quilmes was established in 1818. During the first British invasion, lasting 46 days in 1806, the British arrived from Montevideo through Quilmes and went to Buenos Aires from there.

Cerveza Quilmes

Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes (locally: [serβeseˈɾi.a i malteˈɾi.a ˈkilmes]) is an Argentine Brewery founded in 1888 in Quilmes, Buenos Aires Province, by Otto Bemberg, a German immigrant.

The company quickly started growing and in the 1920s it was already the most popular beer in Buenos Aires. Since then, it has become something of a national symbol, and has 75% of the beer market share in Argentina. It sponsors the Argentina national football team, and the colours of its labels are Argentina's light blue and white.

As of 2005, la Quilmes has plants in Quilmes, Zárate, Tres Arroyos, Corrientes, Tucumán and Mendoza. It is also exported to Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, USA, Spain, Israel, Dominican Republic, France, UK, Italy, Australia and several other countries. It sells a yearly total of around 17 million hL of beer and 8 million hL of soft drinks and others.

QUINSA

The international company Quilmes Industrial S.A. (QUINSA) is a Luxembourg-based holding that controls Quilmes, and franchises PepsiCo's products, including Gatorade and Tropicana, in Argentina and Uruguay. QUINSA owns 30% of Quilmes, with 53% of the voting rights within the corporation.

Quilmes Partido

Quilmes is a partido of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, within the Gran Buenos Aires conurbation.

It has an area of 125 square kilometres, and a population of 580,829 (2010 census [INDEC]), making it the third most populous partido in the Gran Buenos Aires. Named after the Quilmes Tribe, its capital is the city of Quilmes.

Beer

Quilmes gives its name to one of Argentina's favourite beers, Cerveza Quilmes, which was originally brewed in the area. The company produce about 1.5 billion litres of beer a year, most of which is consumed in Argentina.

Sport

Quilmes is home to two football clubs, Quilmes Atlético Club of the Primera Division and Club Atlético Argentino de Quilmes of the regionalised 5th Division. The city also stands out in many other sports, including field hockey, basketball and rugby, among others.

Christianity

In 1666 was established the Cathedral of Quilmes (Catedral de Quilmes in Spanish). In 1976 a papal bull created the Diócesis de Quilmes. The first minister was Padre Obispo Jorge Novak, famous for his defense of Human Rights during the Proceso de Reorganización Nacional.
