Area code 775 is a Nevada telephone area code that was split from area code 702 on December 12, 1998. It covers the entire state except for Clark County (Las Vegas) which retained 702. Major cities in the 775 territory include Reno, Carson City and Elko. It is one of the largest area codes that doesn't cover an entire state.
Prior to the creation of 775, 702 had served all of Nevada for 51 years. While Nevada's dramatic growth in the second half of the 20th century would have made a second area code a must in any event, the split was hastened by the proliferation of cell phones, pagers, and fax machines--particularly in Reno and Carson City.
While it appears to be rural, more than 80 percent of its numbers are located in Reno and Carson City. 775 is expected to stay in its current configuration until early 2043. Despite the rapid growth of Reno and Carson City, it is nowhere near exhausting.
