"Area Codes" is a song by American hip hop recording artist Ludacris, released as the lead single from his third album, Word of Mouf (2001). It features Nate Dogg. The song's lyrics focus on U.S. telephone area codes that denote the location of prostitutes with whom the rapper has had sexual relations in cities across the United States.

The song was written by D. Davis, K. Hilson, J. Jones, R. Walters, and C. Bridges and was produced by Jazze Pha.

Overview

At five minutes and three seconds, it is the fifth-longest track on the album. The song was originally released on the soundtrack to Rush Hour 2.

It debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 84 on July 14, 2001 and peaked at No. 24 on September 8, 2001.

The song was also included briefly in a scene from The Fast and the Furious.

Telephone numbering plan

A telephone numbering plan is a type of numbering scheme used in telecommunication to assign telephone numbers to subscriber telephones or other telephony endpoints. Telephone numbers are the addresses of participants in a telephone network, reachable by a system of destination code routing. Telephone numbering plans are defined in each of administrative regions of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and they are also present in private telephone networks.

Numbering plans may follow a variety of design strategies which have often arisen from the historical evolution of individual telephone networks and local requirements. A broad division is commonly recognized, distinguishing open numbering plans and closed numbering plans. A closed numbering plan imposes a fixed number of digits to every telephone number, while an open numbering plan allows variance in the numbers of digits. Many numbering plans subdivide their territory of service into geographic regions designated by an area code, which is a fixed-length or variable-length set of digits forming the most-significant part of the dialing sequence to reach a telephone subscriber.

Area codes 410, 443, and 667

Area codes 410, 443, and 667 are telephone area codes serving the eastern half of the U.S. state of Maryland, including the Baltimore metropolitan area and the Eastern Shore. The 410 area code is the main area code, while the 443 and 667 codes are overlay codes. 443 and 667 were primarily used with cell phones and CLEC carriers such as Comcast or Cavalier Telephone when introduced but have since become universal in their carrier availability.

History

Before these area codes were created, all of Maryland had been served by 301 since the institution of area codes in 1947, even though the state is home to two very large metropolitan areas--Baltimore and Washington, D. C. This made Maryland one of the most-populous states to be served by a single area code. However, by the late 1980s, 301 was on the verge of exhaustion due to the rapid growth of the Baltimore and Washington suburbs. The supply of available numbers was further limited by the fact that most of the Maryland side of the Washington area shares an LATA with northern Virginia and the District itself. For over 40 years, it was possible to make a call between portions of the Washington area with only seven digits, since every number in 301 and northern Virginia's 703 was given a "hidden" number in the District's area code 202.

Area codes 419 and 567

North American telephone area codes 419 and 567 serve the northwest quadrant of the U.S. state of Ohio. The largest city served by these area codes is Toledo (and its suburbs of Holland, Maumee, Northwood, Oregon, Ottawa Hills, Perrysburg, Rossford, Sylvania, Swanton, Waterville, and Whitehouse).

Other cities served by these area codes include Ada, Ashland, Bellevue, Bluffton, Bowling Green, Bryan, Bucyrus, Celina, Clyde, Crestline, Defiance, Delphos, Edison, Findlay, Fostoria, Fremont, Galion, Kenton, Lima, Mansfield, Mount Gilead, Napoleon, Norwalk, Oak Harbor, Port Clinton, Sandusky, Shelby, St. Marys, Tiffin, Upper Sandusky, Van Wert, Wapakoneta, Wauseon, Willard. Other areas served include the Lake Erie Islands north of Port Clinton and west of Sandusky.

The main area code, 419, was created as one of the original area codes in October 1947; the overlay area code 567 was created on January 1, 2002. Despite the presence of Toledo, the state's fourth-largest city, 419 was the last of Ohio's original four area codes to have been split or overlaid. However, it is the only one of Ohio's original four NPAs, and one of the few original NPAs not covering an entire state, that still has its original boundaries.
