Athena (/əˈθiːnə/; Attic Greek: Ἀθηνᾶ, Athēnā, or Ἀθηναία, Athēnaia; Epic: Ἀθηναίη, Athēnaiē; Doric: Ἀθάνα, Athānā) or Athene (/əˈθiːniː/; Ionic: Ἀθήνη, Athēnē), often given the epithet Pallas (/ˈpæləs/; Παλλὰς), is the goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, mathematics, olive oil, strength, war strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill in ancient Greek religion and mythology. Minerva is the Roman goddess identified with Athena. Athena is known for her calm temperament, as she moves slowly to anger. She is noted to have only fought for just reasons, and would not fight without a purpose.
Athena is portrayed as a shrewd companion of heroes and is the patron goddess of heroic endeavour. She is the virgin patroness of Athens. The Athenians founded the Parthenon on the Acropolis of her namesake city, Athens (Athena Parthenos), in her honour.
Veneration of Athena was so persistent that archaic myths about her were recast to adapt to cultural changes. In her role as a protector of the city (polis), many people throughout the Greek world worshipped Athena as Athena Polias (Ἀθηνᾶ Πολιάς "Athena of the city"). While the city of Athens and the goddess Athena essentially bear the same name (Athena the goddess, Athenai the city), it is not known which of the two words is derived from the other.
Athena (アテナ, Atena) (spelled in Greek as Ἀθηνᾶ and Ἀσάνα, in the manga and the anime adaptation respectively, and occasionally as Ἀθάνα in both) is one of the main characters in the Saint Seiya series, a manga authored by Masami Kurumada, which was later adapted to anime and originated three other spin-off manga.
She was introduced by Masami Kurumada in chapter 1 of his manga, Saint Seiya, as the mythical Greek goddess, and then in chapter 3 of the first volume as Saori Kido, the head of the Graude Foundation, an extremely beautiful young woman, who radiates elegance, wisdom and serenity, and who is followed and protected by her dedicated Saints. In the anime adaptation, she appears in episode 1, initially unaware of her divine nature. She also appears in several other related works, such as a sequel, five films, video games and two manga by different authors. Saori is also a main character in the official sequel to the original manga, Saint Seiya: Next Dimension. In alternative spin-off series Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas, written and drawn by Shiori Teshirogi, introduces an alternate eighteenth century incarnation of Athena named Sasha (サーシャ, Sāsha), an orphan from a small village of Italy who is adopted by the Sanctuary. The fifteenth century incarnation also appears briefly, whome Teshirogi refers to as "The previous Athena" (先代アテナ, Sendai Atena).
Athena is a ska punk band from Istanbul, Turkey that is famous in Turkey and is also well known in Germany. Its current line-up is composed of Hakan Özoğuz (guitar and backing vocals), Gökhan Özoğuz (lead vocals and guitar), Umut Arabacı (bass), Emre Ataker (keyboards), Sinan Tinar (drums).
Athena (ah-T'hěn-ah) was formed by twin brothers Gökhan Özoğuz and Hakan Özoğuz in 1987. They started their musical life as a metal band, but switched to the ska genre sometime later.
Until 1999 they performed numerous concerts and paved their way to their first album Holigan. Athena's ska sound and songs were welcomed by the local record buying public so much so that the title song Holigan was adopted as a march by football supporters of all ages at the stadiums. The album hit various Turkish charts and stayed at the top for a considerable amount of time. Shortly after releasing the Holigan' album, Athena did a large scale tour of Turkey. One of the significant moments of the tour was their show at Açikhava Tiyatrosu in Istanbul, followed by their role as a support act for the Rolling Stones concert at Ali Sami Yen Stadium, home to the Turkish football club Galatasaray, which they consider to be the most important performance of their career.
Apocalypse is a progressive rock band from Brazil that plays symphonic rock with strong electronic keyboard orientation. Many influences can be noticed among their discography, but Genesis, Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, Rush and Marillion are the most present.
The lineup of Apocalypse consisted of Eloy Fritsch (electronic keyboards), Carlos D'Elia (bass), Ruy Fritsch (guitars), Rainer Steiner (drums) and Gustavo Demarchi (lead vocal and flute).
The progressive rock band Apocalypse was born in 1983, in Caxias do Sul, Southern Brazil, founded by Eloy Fritsch and some school friends at the Colégio Nossa Senhora do Carmo who got together for a student music contest. After this first concert, guitar player Ruy Fritsch and drummer Chico Fasoli joined their ranks, playing with the band at the Festival 1º Ópera Rock. From the beginning, they presented a very different style, compared to the other local groups. They made use of organ, synthesizers, classical vocals and created songs influenced by Uriah Heep, Yes, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Genesis and Queen. From 1984 to 1988, the line-up changed several times.
"End of Days" is the thirteenth episode and the first series finale of the British science fiction television series Torchwood. It originally aired on BBC Three on 1 January 2007, alongside the previous episode, "Captain Jack Harkness". The episode was written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Ashley Way. The episode follows "Captain Jack Harkness", where the team open the rift to rescue Jack (John Barrowman) and Tosh (Naoko Mori) from 1941, only to find the rift has opened, causing the past and future of time to bleed through. The episode received three 2008 BAFTA Cymru award nominations, though none of them was won.
During Gwen's (Eve Myles) morning off with her boyfriend Rhys (Kai Owen), they both see news reports of UFO sightings over the Taj Mahal, and an armed clash between CO19 officers and English civil war era soldiers. When she returns to the Hub, the team learns that they are caused by unstable rift activity after it was opened to rescue Tosh and Jack. Torchwood has its hands full; Tosh and Owen (Burn Gorman) investigate cases of the Black Death in a local hospital, where Tosh sees a glimpse of her mother, while Jack and Gwen are alerted by PC Andy to a Roman soldier in a police custody. In that time, Gwen sees a glimpse of Bilis Manger (Murray Melvin). Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd) sees Lisa (Caroline Chikezie), who tries to convince him to open the rift. During a heated argument, Jack fires Owen. While at a bar, Owen sees Diane (Louise Delamere), who tries to convince him to open the rift.
Apocalypse is a chess variant invented by C. S. Elliott in 1976. The players each start with two horsemen and five footmen on a 5×5 board. The two sides make their moves simultaneously.
The game was featured in Issue 53 of Games & Puzzles magazine.
The starting setup is as shown. Horsemen and footmen move and capture the same as knights and pawns in chess, except footmen do not have a double-step option on their first move. For each turn, each player secretly writes down his move, then the players simultaneously declare them. The following rules apply:
A footman promotes to horseman when reaching the last rank, but only when the player has less than two horsemen. Otherwise the player must redeploy the footman to any vacant square.
When I see the hands of thunder
crawling in the night,
evil's dream around the creatures
(is) waiting for its time.
Now the beast trusts your sorrow
now it's time to die.
Silence comes, the final storm
rages against the world.
Listen to my lasting dream
every time I need it,
angels cry for your crimes
evil's calm deceives.
Rain is falling all around
to forgive my sins
there's no time to explain,
while my soul is burning inside.
Tears from my eyes when I remember
ash on my hands when I forget.
Now I feel the flames around me
entering my eyes
now the beast trusts your sorrow
now it's time to die.
Listen to my lasting dream
every time I need it,
angels cry for your crimes
evil's calm deceives.
Rain is falling all around
to forgive my sins
there's no time to explain,
while my soul is burning inside.
Tears from my eyes when I remember
ash on my hands when I forget.
