Dahlia

Dahlia (UK /deɪliə/ or US /dɑːliə/) is a genus of bushy, tuberous, herbaceous perennial plants native to Mexico. A member of the Asteraceae (or Compositae), dicotyledonous plants, related species include the sunflower, daisy, chrysanthemum, and zinnia. There are 42 species of dahlia, with hybrids commonly grown as garden plants. Flower forms are variable, with one head per stem; these can be as small as 2 in (5.1 cm) diameter or up to 1 ft (30 cm) ("dinner plate"). This great variety results from dahlias being octoploids—that is, they have eight sets of homologous chromosomes, whereas most plants have only two. In addition, dahlias also contain many transposons—genetic pieces that move from place to place upon an allele—which contributes to their manifesting such great diversity.

The stems are leafy, ranging in height from as low as 12 in (30 cm) to more than 6–8 ft (1.8–2.4 m). The majority of species do not produce scented flowers or cultivars. Like most plants that do not attract pollinating insects through scent, they are brightly colored, displaying most hues, with the exception of blue.

"Dahlia" is the thirteenth single by Japanese heavy metal band X Japan, released on February 26, 1996.

Summary

"Dahlia" went on to become the title track of the band's 1996 album and one of Yoshiki's last compositions in his signature blend of speed and symphonic metal. The song's title, "Dahlia", appears in the lyrics as an acronym during a voice over, which says "destiny, alive, heaven, love, innocence, always, destroy, aftermath, hell, life, infinite".

The single was released with two different covers. The B-side is a live version of "Tears", recorded on December 30, 1993 at the Tokyo Dome. The same recording also appears on their live compilation album Live Live Live Tokyo Dome 1993-1996.

Commercial performance

The single reached number 1 on the Oricon charts, and charted for 8 weeks. In 1996, with 412,810 copies sold was the 72nd best-selling single of the year, being certified Platinum by RIAJ.

Dahlia (album)

Dahlia is the fifth studio album by the Japanese heavy metal band X Japan, released on November 4, 1996 by Atlantic Records. It is the band's last album before breaking up the following year, and the last to feature new work by guitarist hide, due to his death two years later. The album is composed largely of ballads, with only a few tracks retaining the band's heavier musical traits seen on previous releases. It topped the Oricon chart and stayed on the chart for only 15 weeks, but managed to sell over half a million copies. Seven, nearly all, of the album's songs were released as singles, most of which also topped the singles chart and sold well.

Overview

Only a few months after the release of Art of Life in 1993, X Japan began recording and releasing singles that would appear on their next studio album Dahlia, which released in 1996 turned out to be their last. 1994 held few performances for the band as the members were focusing on their solo and side projects, but they did play two consecutive New Year's Eve concerts at the Tokyo Dome, titled Aoi Yoru (青い夜, Blue Night) and Shiroi Yoru (白い夜, White Night) respectively. These concerts were released on DVDs in 2007 as Aoi Yoru and Shiroi Yoru. The following year was also slow, until November 19 when the band began the tour for their next album, Dahlia Tour 1995-1996. Around this time, is when the group dropped most of its original visual kei aesthetics in favor of a more casual look.

Anytime! (A Live Set)

Anytime! (A Live Set) is a 2004 live acoustic album by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, under the name The Steve Harley Band.

The album consists of eleven live unplugged tracks and a bonus track; "Sophistication" which was a previously unreleased studio recording from 1986. It remains exclusive to the Anytime! album.

For a possible album release, many shows were recorded, but the tracks that ended up forming the Anytime! (A Live Set) album were culled from performances at Huntingdon Hall, Worcester, and The Jazz Café, London, during the summer of 2003.

The album was released on CD in the UK only, through Gott Discs, whilst Pinnacle Records handled the album's distribution within the UK. It was licensed from Comeuppance Ltd. Today the album is available second-hand or from Harley's official website shop on CD and download.

Background

In a Record Collector Interview with Nick Dalton during June 2005, Harley was asked "Has you music changed of late?", and Harley replied "Anytime! is seriously unplugged electro-acoustic. It's similar to original Cockney Rebel – violin, no electric guitar. But I still like playing with my electric band. I'm doing Glastonbury again, headlining the acoustic stage for the first time." The article also used the same photograph of Harley as seen on the album's front cover.

Anytime (album)

Anytime is the third album by Brian McKnight. This was the last record McKnight recorded with Mercury Records before moving to Motown. In fact, Anytime would be re-released on Motown after he signed with the label (as Mercury and Motown at the time were both owned by PolyGram). The single "You Should Be Mine (Don't Waste Your Time)" became his biggest hit in four years, peaking at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. It featured rapper Mase, whose own career was at its peak during 1997. It broke into the top 20 on the Billboard 200 chart, and to date is McKnight's highest peaking album on the Top R&B Albums chart where it took the No. 1 position for three weeks. McKnight's track "The Only One for Me" appeared in the sitcom, Sister, Sister, in which McKnight dated Tia (Tia Mowry) and broke up with Tyreke (RonReaco Lee) in the season 6 episode, "The Grass Is Always Greener".

The title track was an even bigger hit, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart in May 1998. The song was not released as a single, and was therefore ineligible to chart on the Hot 100, but was still one of the most played songs on the radio during 1998.

I Need You (album)

I Need You is the third compilation album from American recording artist LeAnn Rimes. The album was first released on January 30, 2001, through Curb Records to help satisfy Rimes' recording contract obligations during litigation with the label and her management. Rimes publicly disowned the album just days after its release, causing it to be discontinued. The album was then officially released by Rimes on March 26, 2002, with four additional tracks and a new recording: "Light the Fire Within". In 2008, the album was released as a package with Rimes' debut album, Blue (1996).

I Need You received mixed reviews by music critics, who praised its pop appeal but criticized the selection of the songs, noting that none of them made a significant impact on the listeners. In the United States, the album peaked at number one on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, and reached number ten on the Billboard 200. Internationally, it peaked at number four on the Finnish Albums Chart, number ten on the Canadian Albums Chart, and number eleven on both the Austrian Albums Chart and the Irish Album Chart. The album was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), among other organizations, and was certified platinum by both Music Canada and the IFPI Finland.
