In geography, the antipodes (/ænˈtɪpədiːz/; from Greek: ἀντίποδες, from anti- "opposed" and pous "foot") of any place on Earth is the point on the Earth's surface which is diametrically opposite to it. Two points that are antipodal /ænˈtɪpədəl/ to each other are connected by a straight line running through the centre of the Earth.
In the Northern Hemisphere, "the Antipodes" may be used to refer to Australia and New Zealand, and "Antipodeans" to their inhabitants. Geographically the antipodes of Britain and Ireland are in the Pacific Ocean, south of New Zealand. This gave rise to the name of the Antipodes Islands of New Zealand, which are close to the antipodes of London at about 50° S 179° E. The antipodes of Australia are in the North Atlantic Ocean, while parts of Spain, Portugal, and Morocco are antipodal to New Zealand.
Approximately 15% of land territory is antipodal to other land, representing approximately 4.4% of the Earth's surface. The largest antipodal land masses are the Malay Archipelago, antipodal to the Amazon Basin and adjoining Andean ranges; east China and Mongolia, antipodal to Chile and Argentina; and Greenland and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, antipodal to East Antarctica.
Antipodes is a public artwork by American sculptor Jim Sanborn located outside of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, United States.
This sculpture consists of two copper curved pieces attached to a piece of petrified wood by steel bands. The "scrolls" have letters punched into them, one piece is in English and the other piece is "coded" in Cyrillic.
The original "Antipodes" is a 6 foot high version of the Hirshhorn sculpture that was created in 1992 which was purchased by art collectors Gilbert and Ann Kinney. The small piece was displayed on the terrace of the Kinney home and upon moving the couple donated the piece to the Hirshhorn. In 1997 the Neuberger Museum of Art commissioned a large scale version of "Antipodes" for the Neuberger Biennial. After the Biennial, Sanborn traded the large piece for the smaller version to the Hirshhorn, hence it now residing outside the Washington based museum. The smaller version of "Antipodes" has since been sold to a private collector in California via L.A. Louver.
Antipodes (Perry / Hoffmann / Marlin / SAL) is a 5-person manned submersible that was first built in 1973 as a diver lock-out sub by Perry Submarine, named PC-1501, where it spent several years operating in the North Sea oil fields.
Rebuilt in 1995 to include a 58" in diameter, hemispherical domes at each end of the hull and renamed XPC15, it was installed and operated around the world aboard the Mystere, a 200-foot yacht. It was further modified in 2001 and renamed Antipodes by Submarine Adventures, which successfully operated the sub in Milford Sound, New Zealand, where it took thousands of tourists on dives to depths of 1,000 feet.
Antipodes is certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and has proven itself as a safe and effective vessel over the course of more than 1,300 dives in a variety of sea conditions. While typical mission profiles will call for dives of 2–8 hours in duration, Antipodes has the additional capability to provide life support for five people for 72 hours.
"Just give me some fucking pizza!"
Unmade by anti-pizza.
So good it destroyed the world.
One slice of anti-matter,
Delicious and uncontrollable.
There’s not a better passion.
It’s there- for you of course.
Imploding with taste of thunder,
Dense as the heart of a star.
UNMADE BY ANTI-PIZZA!
UNMADE BY ANTI-PIZZA!
One bite, beyond reason,
Just taste another world.
Nothing like anti-pizza,
Catastrophic yet edible.
Crackling with anti-matter!
Anti-cheese and anti-dough,
It’s impossible!
UNMADE BY ANTI-PIZZA!
UNMADE BY ANTI-PIZZA!
UNMADE BY ANTI-PIZZA!
UNMADE! UNMADE!
There’s not a better passion.
It’s there- for you of course.
Imploding with taste of thunder,
Dense as the heart of a star.
UNMADE BY ANTI-PIZZA!
UNMADE BY ANTI-PIZZA!
UNMADE BY ANTI-PIZZA!
UNMADE! UNMADE!
Crackling with anti-matter!
Anti-cheese and anti-dough,
It’s impossible!
