Anthony Tyrone Thompson (born August 17, 1981 in Philadelphia, PA) is a boxer in the Junior middleweight division.

As of July 2009, Thompson has a record of 24 victories, 18 by knockout, with three defeats.

Career

Amateur career

Thompson had an outstanding amateur career, and was the 2000 National Golden Gloves Welterweight Champion. In addition, he was 2001 United States Amateur champion. Thompson was also the runner-up at 2001 World Championship in Belfast, Northern Ireland, losing to Lorenzo Aragon of Cuba.In 2000 Anthony also won the USA National Championships and the National (PAL) Police Athletic League Championship one of few boxers to ever win the triple crown of amateur boxing in the same year.Anthony repeated as USA National Champion in 2001.

Professional career

Thompson turned pro in 2002 and was quickly thought to be a future champion, but his career hit a snag with a TKO loss to future The Contender star Grady Brewer in 2004. Since the loss he has run off several wins against limited opposition, including a win over seasoned veteran Robert Frazier, and he may currently be positioning himself for a shot at a major contender.

Anthony Thompson is a Gaelic football wing back. He plays with his local club Naomh Conaill and is a member of the Donegal senior inter-county team.

Thompson's virtuoso performance in the 2012 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final was highlighted by The Irish Times which noted how he "seemed to shepherd the play exactly to his liking and moved through the fare in that unhurried, three-quarters pace style of his", at one stage "loitering in front of David Clarke's goal, a de facto full forward doing what good front men do: keeping quiet as a church mouse and waiting to be spotted".

Playing career

Club

Playing alongside John Gildea in midfield, Thompson scored 3 points, including 2 frees, in the final as Naomh Conaill won their first ever Donegal Senior Football Championship in 2005. He was sent off in the final of the 2009 Donegal Senior Football Championship, which his team lost to Saint Eunan's. His club won the 2010 County Final and went on to reach the final of the 2010 Ulster Senior Club Football Championship, knocking out Cavan champions Kingscourt, Monaghan champions Clontibret and Tyrone champions Coalisland along the way.
