Antaeus

Antaeus (Greek: Ἀνταῖος, Antaîos, lit. "Opponent"; Berber: Änti) was a figure in Greek and Berber mythology. In Greek sources, he was the half-giant son of Poseidon and Gaia. His wife was the goddess Tinge, and he had a daughter named Alceis or Barce. He was famed for his loss to Hercules during that demigod's 12 Labors.

Mythology

Antaeus would challenge all passers-by to wrestling matches and remained invincible as long as he remained in contact with his mother, the earth. As Greek wrestling, like its modern equivalent, typically attempted to force opponents to the ground, he always won, killing his opponents. He built a temple to his father using their skulls. Antaeus fought Hercules as he was on his way to the Garden of Hesperides as his 11th Labor. Hercules realized that he could not beat Antaeus by throwing or pinning him. Instead, he held him aloft and then crushed him to death in a bearhug.

The contest between Hercules and Antaeus was a favored subject in ancient and Renaissance sculpture.

Antaeus (short story)

Antaeus is a short story by Borden Deal. It is named after the mythological figure Antaeus, a giant who was unconquerable as long as he touched the ground.

This story has appeared in many American and European school textbooks. It is an archetypal tale of rural ways clashing with urban lifestyles.

The story is about a boy named T.J. from Marion County, Alabama who moves to a city in the North. He organizes an effort by a gang of kids to grow a garden at the gang’s hideout, on top of a factory building. T.J. is southern boy who has moved to a big city. He is lost until he finds a way to bring himself back home, by building a garden. His parents were in Alabama, which decide to move into the north (they were at the south) to get a job because they were homeless dorks.

After a lot of painstaking work, the kids are finally successful in cultivating grass, but are discovered on the rooftop by three strangers, including the building’s owner. The owner orders the garden to be shoveled off by one of the other strangers by the next day. Not wanting this to happen, T.J. destroys the garden himself, throwing the dirt and grass off the roof. He didn't want anyone to touch the garden, so ironically to protect it, he destroyed it.

Antaeus (magazine)

Antaeus was a literary quarterly founded by Daniel Halpern and Paul Bowles and edited by Daniel Halpern. It was originally published in Tangier, Morocco, but operations were later shifted to New York City. The first number appeared in the summer of 1970, the final issue (#75/76) in 1994. Beginning with the third issue, the magazine bore the imprint of the Ecco Press, which eventually became established as a book publisher. A small number of limited editions were also issued in conjunction with the magazine under the imprint of Antaeus Editions.

Particularly in its early years, Antaeus was known for its internationalist scope. Among its notable contributors were J. G. Ballard, Paul Bowles, Guy Davenport, Harry Mathews, Joyce Carol Oates, Breece D'J Pancake, Yannis Ritsos, Leslie Marmon Silko and Andrew Vachss.
