Ant (DC Comics)

The Ant is a fictional superhero published by DC Comics. He started out as an opponent of the Teen Titans but ended up as their ally. The Ant first appeared in Teen Titans (vol. 1) #5 (September 1966), and was created by Bob Haney and Nick Cardy.

Fictional character biography

Eddie Whit's parents were a circus strongman and acrobat, and after they die, he becomes a juvenile delinquent. Eddie is sent to Lacklock Camp, a reform school of sorts. After being released, he gains custody of his younger brother Danny and takes a job at Zenith Caterer. The owner of Zenith, Krasko, claims he has proof that Danny is involved in gang-related crimes, and blackmails Eddie into committing burglaries under the costumed guise of the Ant. The Teen Titans are sent in to investigate, and when they learn the details of Eddie's situation they are sympathetic. During a robbery Ant turns against Krasko and helps the Teen Titans put him behind bars. As a reward for his cooperation, the Titans promise Ant that he will not serve a prison sentence, but will only have to spend some more time in Lacklock Camp.

Ant (chair)

The Ant (Danish: Myren)chair is a classic of modern chair design. It was designed in 1952 by Arne Jacobsen for use in the canteen of the Danish pharmaceutical firm Novo Nordisk. The Ant was named for its approximate similarity to the outline of an ant with its head raised.

The chair was designed to be light, stable, easy to stack up, and to minimise tangling the user's feet. The original model had three plastic legs and a seat made from form-moulded laminated veneer; Novo ordered just 300 of them. They were manufactured by Fritz Hansen. The chair has since proved very popular although the plastic in the legs was replaced by tubular steel, and a version with four legs was also made.

Bobâlna (Olpret until 1957; Hungarian: Alparét; German: Krautfeld) is a commune in Cluj County, Romania, having a population of 1,888. It is composed of eleven villages: Antăş (Antos), Băbdiu (Zápróc), Blidăreşti (Tálosfalva), Bobâlna, Cremenea (Keménye), Maia (Mánya), Oşorhel (Erdővásárhely), Pruni (Nagymező), Răzbuneni (Radákszinye), Suarăş (Szóváros) and Vâlcelele (Bujdos).

The first document that mentions the village is from 1332. This village was the place where the 15th century Bobâlna revolt started.

Demographics

According to the census from 2002 there was a total population of 1,888 people living in this town. Of this population, 99.76% are ethnic Romanians, 1.85% ethnic Romani and 1.37% are ethnic Hungarians.

Skip (audio playback)

A skip occurs when a phonograph (gramophone), cassette tape or Compact Disc player malfunctions or is disturbed so as to play incorrectly, causing a break in sound or a jump to another part of the recording.

Vinyl gramophone records

Vinyl records are easily scratched and vinyl readily acquires a static charge, attracting dust that is difficult to remove completely. Dust and scratches cause audio clicks and pops and, in extreme cases, they can cause the needle (stylus) to skip over a series of grooves, or worse yet, cause the needle to skip backwards, creating an unintentional locked groove that repeats the same 1.8 seconds (at 33⅓ RPM) or 1.3 seconds (at 45 RPM) of track over and over again. Locked grooves are not uncommon and are even heard occasionally in broadcasts. The locked groove gave rise to the expression "broken record" referring to someone who continually repeats the same statement with little if any variation.

Compact Discs

A "skip" or "jump" is when the laser of a Compact Disc player cannot read the faulty groove or block of data. Skips are usually caused by marks blocking the path of the beam to the disc, e.g. a finger mark, hair, dirt in general, or a scratch. Since the read mechanism has very little contact with the disc's surface and the data itself is not on the outer layer of the disc, the blockage is not a physical issue as with a record, but rather reflective.

Skip (container)

A skip (UK English) or dumpster (US and Canadian English) is a large open-topped waste container designed for loading onto a special type of lorry. Instead of being emptied into a garbage truck on site, as a wheelie bin is, a skip is removed, or replaced by an empty skip, and then tipped at a landfill site or transfer station.

Typically skip bins have a distinctive shape: the longitudinal cross-section of the skip bin is either a trapezoid or two stacked trapezoids. The lower trapezoid has the smaller edge at the bottom of the skip bin, and a longer edge at the top. Where there is an upper trapezoid, it has the smaller edge at the top. At either end of the skip bin there is a sloping floor or wall. There are usually two lugs at the ends of the bin onto which chains can be attached, permitting the heavy skip bin to be lifted onto and off a lorry. A special skip-carrying lorry or crane is used.

One end of the skip sometimes has a large door that hinges down to allow manual loading and unloading. Skips are usually durable and tough, made to withstand rough use by tradesmen and labourers. The size of skip bins can vary greatly depending on their use, with sizes ranging from small 2 yard mini skips to the very large 40 yard roll-on roll-off skips. Even though these large bins can store many tonnes of waste, most lorries are limited to carrying around 8 tonnes (8,000 kg) of material in the container.

Gait (human)

Human gait refers to locomotion achieved through the movement of human limbs. Human gait is defined as bipedal, biphasic forward propulsion of center of gravity of the human body, in which there are alternate sinuous movements of different segments of the body with least expenditure of energy. Different gait patterns are characterized by differences in limb movement patterns, overall velocity, forces, kinetic and potential energy cycles, and changes in the contact with the surface (ground, floor, etc.). Human gaits are the various ways in which a human can move, either naturally or as a result of specialized training.

Classification

Gaits can be roughly categorized into two groups: the natural gaits that nearly every human will use without special training, and the specialized gaits which people train to use under specific conditions and situations.
