HERO Magazine was an American glossy bimonthly gay magazine co-founded in 1997 by Sam Jensen Page and Paul Horne. The magazine stopped publication in January 2002. It was based in Los Angeles.
The magazine rode the wave of the "mainstreaming" of gay culture and was the first gay magazine to be classified as "highly recommended" by Library Journal. It published the first automotive column in a national gay magazine, the first gay man's wedding guide, etc. HERO turned away from the "sex sells" attitude of many other gay publications, and did not accept adult or tobacco advertising. The magazine was also more inclusive of couples and men over 40 than other gay men's magazines at the time.
After fast growth in its first 3 years, the magazine's financial backing was frozen after September 11, 2001, and the publication ceased operations in January 2002. Parent company HERO Media continues to develop other online and print publications, including SpaTravelGuy.com.
Felony is an American new wave and rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in the early 1980s by brothers Jeffrey Spirili and Joe Spirili. The brothers were also known as Jeff Spry and Joe Spry.
Before Felony, Jeffrey Spry had been the singer with Detroit Proto-Punk/Hard rock legends, Ron Asheton (of Iggy & The Stooges) and Dennis "Machine Gun" Thompson (of The MC5) in a short lived super-group (based in Los Angeles) that was called "The New Order" (preceding the English new wave group of the same name). Jeff was in the band in 1975 and recorded an album with them that was released in 1977.
After a period playing shows and making music business connections in the Los Angeles scene, Felony appeared in the horror b-movie Graduation Day (1981), playing their song "Gangsters of Rock." Soon after, they signed with producers/managers Don Rubin, formerly of pop group The Ivy Three, and Artie Kornfeld. Some live shows were mixed by sound engineer Steve Sands.
Felony went into the studio and emerged with single "The Fanatic," which became a hit on Los Angeles radio station KROQ-FM with help from program director Rick Carroll. The song reached the top 50 in the singles charts and topped the alternative and dance charts. It became a key track in the development of the Modern Rock radio format. "The Fanatic" was included in the influential 1983 Valley Girl soundtrack, which also featured Modern English's "I Melt With You". Felony also performed the track on American Bandstand. A video was made from "The Fanatic" "The Fanatic" video was shot in Hollywood, California in 1983 and aired on MTV. While chasing an escaping suspect during a raid on a drug lab, Detective Mal Toohey (Joel Edgerton) is shot and saved by his protective vest. After celebrating, Mal drives home drunk and hits a young boy on a bike with his side-view mirror. He calls an ambulance, but denies any involvement in the accident. When honest young cop Jim Mellic (Jai Courtney) and his cynical older partner Carl Summer (Tom Wilkinson) arrive on the scene, Carl recognises Mal and sends Jim off to secure the perimeter. He questions Mal privately and sends him home, making Jim suspicious.
The boy is identified as William Sarduka and Jim falls in love with the boy's mother, Ankhila (Sarah Roberts). Meanwhile, Carl has become obsessed with proving that a pedophile named Victor is responsible for the abduction and rape of a young girl. During a court hearing, Victor is released on bail. Afterwards, Carl cynically criticizes and questions the legal system. At a secret meeting with Carl, Mal says he wants to come clean and reveal his responsibility for the accident, unlike his witness statement in which claimed to have seen the person responsible drive away. Carl insists that Mal keep it secret, for both their sakes, but he cannot get Mal to agree.
Pleased we've met. You will never regret.
I'm the man with the heart of gold.
Trust in me, I will make you feel free.
I'm the man who will change your world.
Take my hand it will feed and defend,
It will show what is to be done.
If you want me to stay, I will rule you'll obey.
Let us play, sure it will be fun.
You are the one! You are the one! Teach me!
You are the one! The only one! Preach me!
What's to be done? What's to be done? Tell me!
And I will do, I'll die for you! Tell me to!
[Chorus:]
And rising fists come crashing,
Thoughtless fists come smashing,
Faceless fists come thrashing,
Everything that once was known as YOU!
Stand upright for the future is bright.
Close your eyes and you'll see it's real.
Sing a song it will muffle the moan
Of dissent that will soon be healed.
Step inside. What a place to abide!
Prison walls make you feel secure.
Dream away from the thoughts of the day.
Sleep of thoughts is your ultimate cure.
You are the one! You are the one! Teach me!
You are the one! The only one! Preach me!
What's to be done? What's to be done? Tell me!
And I will do, I'll die for you! Tell me to!
[Chorus]
Keep mouth shut or your tongue will be cut
Simple rules for the simple game.
Don't step forth or the things go worse.
You look beautiful when all the same.
Why make noise? You should better rejoice!
You have never ever felt so free.
Young and proud, why don't you shout it loud
"I'm in love with my slavery!"
You are the one, the one teach me!
You are the one, the one preach me!
You are the one, the one tell me!
YOU ARE THE ONE!
The man with heart of gold...
