Anne Wright

Anne Margaret Wright CBE (born 26 July 1946) is a British academic and academic administrator.

She was educated at King's College London (BA English, 1967; PhD, 1970). She was a Lecturer in English at Lancaster University from 1969 to 1971 then Senior Lecturer in Modern English at Hatfield Polytchnic (now the University of Hertfordshire) from 1971 to 84. She served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Sunderland from 1992 to 1998. She was Chair of the National Lottery Commission 2005 to 2013. She was made a CBE in 1997.

Canterbury Martyrs

The Canterbury Martyrs were 16th-century English Protestant martyrs. They were executed for heresy in Canterbury, Kent, during the reign of Mary I. Their story is recorded in Foxe's Book of Martyrs.

12 July 1555

John Bland (rector of Adesham), John Frankesh (vicar of Rolvindon), Nicholas Sheterden and Humphrey Middleton were all burnt together. According to Foxe, they resigned themselves with Christian fortitude, fervently praying that God would receive them into his heavenly kingdom.

23 August 1555

William Coker, William Hopper, Henry Laurence, Richard Collier (or Colliar), Richard Wright and William Stere were burnt.

6 September 1555

George Catmer (or Painter) of Hythe, Kent, Robert Streater (or Streter) of Hythe, Kent, Anthony Burward of Calete (possibly Calais), George Brodbridge (or Bradbridge) of Bromfield, Kent and James Tutty (or Tuttey) of Brenchley, Kent were burnt.

30 November 1555

John Webbe (or Web), George Roper and Gregory Parke (or Paynter) were burnt.
