Ann Arbor Railroad (1988)

The Ann Arbor Railroad (reporting mark AA) is a Class III Railroad that operates fifty miles of track from Toledo, Ohio to Osmer, Michigan. The railroad is operated by Watco Companies and is based out of Toledo, Ohio. Prior to Watco Companies, the railroad was operated by the Ann Arbor Acquisition Corporation from 1988 to 2013, by the Michigan Interstate Railway Company from 1977 to 1988, and as a privately owned enterprise prior to 1977.

Current Operations

The Ann Arbor Railroad operates fifty miles of track between its main terminal, Ottawa Yard, in Toledo, Ohio and Osmer, Michigan, the interchange point with the Great Lakes Central Railroad located just north of Ann Arbor, Michigan. A branch line known as the Saline Branch stretches four miles from Pittsfield, Michigan to Saline, Michigan. The Saline Branch has been used in the past to serve the Faurecia Automotive Components Plant located in Saline, Michigan but is not currently being used in revenue service. The Ann Arbor Railroad also leases and operates an industrial lead in Toledo, Ohio owned by the Norfolk Southern Railway. Much of what the railroad transports is "bridge traffic" and is received at either end of the railroad and transported for interchange with another railroad at the opposite terminal. A variety of different cargoes are transported ranging from grain to liquefied petroleum gas to wooden poles. In Toledo, Ohio, the railroad serves Chrysler transporting finished vehicles from the Toledo Complex.

Ann Arbor Railroad (1895–1976)

The Ann Arbor Railroad (reporting mark AA) was an American railroad that operated between Toledo, Ohio and Elberta and Frankfort, Michigan (about 294 route miles) with train ferry operations across Lake Michigan. In 1967 it reported 572 million net ton-miles of revenue freight, including 107 million in "lake transfer service"; that total does not include the 39-mile subsidiary Manistique and Lake Superior Railroad.

History

The railroad company was chartered September 21, 1895 as successor to the Toledo, Ann Arbor and North Michigan Railway. In 1905 it was acquired by the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Railway (DT&I), which went bankrupt three years later and had to sell off the Ann Arbor.

For many years the Ann Arbor was owned by the Wabash, but Wabash gave up control in 1963 as part of its absorption into the Norfolk and Western. The DT&I, by then itself owned by the giant Pennsylvania Railroad, again gained control in 1963. The combined DT&I and AA were operated as independent subsidiaries of the PRR but suffered from the parent company's ill-fated 1968 merger with the New York Central. Upon the resulting Penn Central's 1970 bankruptcy, the DT&I and its Ann Arbor subsidiary were sold off to private investors.

Ann Arbor (automobile)

The Ann Arbor was an automobile manufactured in Ann Arbor, Michigan, by the Huron River Manufacturing Company from 1911–12. The Ann Arbor was a dual-purpose vehicle, which could be converted from a private car, to a small pickup. Automotive production, however, never succeeded in Ann Arbor. The ill-fated Huron River Manufacturing Company, later the Star Motor Company, did not survive the fierce competition of the burgeoning auto industry. The high cost of living in Ann Arbor meant higher wages and the distance from Detroit increased the cost of materials to a point where profit disappeared.

Ann Arbor is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The 2010 census recorded its population to be 113,934, making it the sixth largest city in Michigan. The Ann Arbor Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) includes all of Washtenaw County, which had a population of 344,791 as of 2010. The city's economy is also centered on high technology, with several companies drawn to the area by the university's research and development money, and by its graduates.
