Andrew Law

Andrew Law (1749–1821) was an American composer, preacher and singing teacher. He was born in Milford, Connecticut. Law wrote mostly simple hymn tunes and arranged tunes of other composers. His works include Select Harmony (1778) and a Collection of Best Tunes and Anthems (1779). He was among the first American composers to put the melody in the soprano instead of the tenor part, and was also one of the first Americans to write about music. Andrew Law was a pioneer of the FASOLA (Shape note) system of musical notation which simplified lessons in reading music during the Singing School era of New England music. FASOLA singing is also known as "Shape Note Singing". He published Essays on Music in 1814. Andrew Law died in 1821.

Andrew Law (1873–1967) was a Scottish artist and portrait painter. Law rarely exhibited outside of the west of Scotland, but, during a long career based on private commissions, he produced a significant body of work.

Life and work

Law was born at Crosshouse in Ayrshire, where his father was a miner and later a publican. Law went to school in Kilmarnock and took evening classes at the Kilmarnock Academy. In 1891, he was awarded the National Medal for Success in Art and won a place at the Glasgow School of Art, where his tutor was Francis Henry Newbery. In 1896, Law was awarded a travelling scholarship and spent six months studying in Paris, where he took lessons from Robert Henri and attended classes at the Academie Delecluse. Law returned to Kilmarnock and began a successful career accepting private portrait commissions.

Law married Elizabeth Wilson in 1912, and the couple moved to Glasgow, where Law continued with his commissioned work. Among these commissions was the full-length portrait of the footballer Alan Morton, which still hangs in the Ibrox Stadium. Law was active in the Glasgow Art Club and also taught part-time at the Glasgow School of Art until his retirement in 1938. Law exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy. His only one-man show was in 1958, and in later life, he continued to paint rural and street scenes around Kilmarnock.

Early life

Andrew Law was born and raised in Cheadle Hulme near Manchester, England. His father was a mechanical engineer and his mother was a nurse. He was educated at Cheadle Hulme High School. He graduated from the University of Sheffield in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, with a First Class honours degree in Economics in 1987.

Career

He started his career in finance at County NatWest, now known as NatWest. He then worked as a trader at the Chemical Bank. In 1996, he joined Goldman Sachs, later becoming a Managing Director, where he oversaw FICC.

He started working at Caxton Associates in London in 2003. In 2008, he became its Chief Investment Officer. Since 2012, he has served as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

Political affiliations

Between May 2010 and January 2015, he donated £947,911 to the Conservative Party, making him its 11th biggest donor in this period.
