Andrew Jackson

Andrew Jackson (March 15, 1767 – June 8, 1845) was the seventh President of the United States (1829–37). He was born near the end of the colonial era, somewhere near the then-unmarked border between North and South Carolina, into a recently immigrated Scots-Irish farming family of relatively modest means. During the American Revolutionary War Jackson, whose family supported the revolutionary cause, acted as a courier. He was captured, at age 13, and mistreated by his British captors. He later became a lawyer. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, and then to the U.S. Senate. In 1801, Jackson was appointed colonel in the Tennessee militia, which became his political as well as military base. Jackson owned hundreds of slaves who worked on the Hermitage plantation which he acquired in 1804. He killed a man in a duel in 1806, over a matter of honor regarding his wife Rachel. Jackson gained national fame through his role in the War of 1812, most famously where he won a decisive victory over the main British invasion army at the Battle of New Orleans. In response to conflict with the Seminole in Spanish Florida, Jackson invaded the territory in 1818. This led directly to the Adams–Onís Treaty, which formally transferred Florida from Spain to the United States.

The sailing ship Andrew Jackson, a 1,679-registered-ton medium clipper, was built by the firm of Irons & Grinnell in Mystic, Connecticut in 1855. The vessel was designed for the shipping firm of J.H. Brower & Co. to carry cargo intended for sale to participants in the California Gold Rush.

Construction

The ship's dimensions were: length 220 feet (67 m), beam 41 ft., 2 in., and draft 22 ft., 3 in. The vessel was described as "a very handsome, well-designed ship. She was heavily sparred and carried double topsails, skysails, and royal studdingsails."

Voyages

Andrew Jackson made seven passages from New York to San Francisco, with an average time of 106¹⁄₃ days. These times compare well with the passages of extreme clippers such as Flying Cloud and Flying Fish, which averaged 105⁵⁄₇ days and 103¹⁄₃ days respectively, and the vessel was advertised as "The Fastest Ship in the World."

Andrew Jackson is best known for her 1859–1860 run around Cape Horn from New York City to San Francisco, which the vessel performed in 89 days and 4 hours. The run began at noon on Christmas Day, 1859, and ended at 4 p.m. on 23 March 1860 at the Farallon Islands.

Andrew Brook "Andy" Jackson is a British recording engineer best known for his work with the British progressive rock band Pink Floyd. He is also the owner and operator of Tube Mastering, a private studio specializing in recorded music mastering.

Career

Originally trained in the profession by producer/engineer James Guthrie at Utopia Studios and serving as his assistant for several years, Jackson began work as an engineer for Pink Floyd in 1980, assisting in the recording of the performances of The Wall at Earls Court. As Guthrie's assistant once more he then worked on the film soundtrack recordings for Pink Floyd The Wall and the studio album The Final Cut. Once Guthrie relocated to Los Angeles, Jackson became the band's primary engineer beginning with A Momentary Lapse of Reason and then The Division Bell plus the material recorded for the soundtrack to the band's 1992 auto racing documentary film La Carrera Panamericana. He was also the Front of House engineer on the band's 1994 world tour. His current primary responsibility is as the Senior Engineer for David Gilmour's studios, Astoria and Medina, and has worked on all of Gilmour's recordings/multimedia projects as an engineer and/or co-producer since 1984. He was also the engineer on Roger Waters' first solo album The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking and worked Front of House on Waters' 1984 tour.
