An Innocent Man

An Innocent Man is the ninth studio album by American singer-songwriter Billy Joel, released on August 8, 1983. The concept album is a tribute to the American popular music of Joel's teenage years with Joel paying homage to a number of different popular American musical styles from the late 1950s and early 1960s, most notably doo-wop and soul music (see each track listed below for specific homages). The album cover artwork was taken on the front steps of 142 Mercer Street, just north of the intersection of Mercer and Prince Street in the SoHo neighborhood in New York City.

Chart performance

The album featured three Billboard Top 10 hit singles: "Tell Her About It", which reached #1, "Uptown Girl", which peaked at #3 and "An Innocent Man", which peaked at #10. Four other singles were released from the album: "The Longest Time" (number 14), "Leave a Tender Moment Alone" (number 27), "Keeping the Faith" (number 18) and "This Night" (US B-Side of "Leave a Tender Moment Alone"). "Tell Her About It" and "Uptown Girl" garnered international success—"Uptown Girl" reached #1 in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. An Innocent Man remained on the U.S. Pop album chart for 111 weeks, becoming Joel's longest charting studio album behind The Stranger. For over a year, the album remained on the charts in the UK, Japan, and Australia.

"An Innocent Man" is a 1983 song performed by Billy Joel and the third single from his album An Innocent Man.

The song, whose musical style is an homage to Ben E. King and The Drifters, reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the third consecutive top 10 single from the album. It also spent one week at #1 on the Billboard adult contemporary chart.

Joel was quoted in a 1997 interview describing the high notes he sang during the song: "I had a suspicion that was going to be the last time I was going to be able to hit those notes, so why not go out in a blaze of glory? That was the end of Billy's high note."

An Innocent Man (film)

An Innocent Man, is a 1989 crime thriller film directed by Peter Yates, and starring Tom Selleck. The film follows James Rainwood, an airline mechanic sent to prison when framed by crooked police officers.

Plot

James "Jimmie" Rainwood (Tom Selleck) is an ordinary and model citizen: happily married to his beautiful wife Kate (Laila Robins), has a modest home in Long Beach, California, works as an American Airlines engineer, drives a classic Pontiac Trans Am and pays his bills.

Detectives Mike Parnell (David Rasche) and Danny Scalise (Richard Young) are cops specializing in drug busts but corrupt by framing people and retaining parts of what should be declared evidence so that they can use it for their own recreational drug use and selling to dealers.

One day Parnell takes a large hit of cocaine and becomes unable to concentrate properly about the address for the next drug bust expecting to find drugs. But instead they break into the wrong house as Jimmie walks out of the bathroom with a handheld hair dryer in hand, Parnell shoots thinking it's a weapon. Rainwood becomes unconscious from being shot in the shoulder. Realising that they could both be tested for taking drugs and charged they decide to cover up their mistake so they plant drugs in the house and place a firearm in the hand of Rainwood's unconscious body and they frame him as a drug dealer. Things look bad, Jimmie is pegged as a user having a prior record of marijuana possession while in college and his only defense is his word against two decorated cops. He claims the two cops framed him but no evidence proves the men are corrupt. He gets a 6-year prison sentence. Internal Affairs detective, John Fitzgerald (Badja Djola) takes a mild personal interest in the situation although he can not do anything since everything is hearsay.

Innocent Man (Mark Morrison album)

Innocent Man is the third album released by British R&B musician Mark Morrison, and released in the UK as a limited edition DVD release. It is the second full-length album release, and follow up to "Return of the Mack" in 1996. In 1997 Mark Morrison released an EP entitled Only God Can Judge Me on Warner Bros.

Critical reception

Overall the album was received very well by critics, but it failed to chart. It was also noted favourably by critics that Mark had improved on his singing-abilities and also managed to create a solid album, despite the many setbacks and problems he had undergone between the release of the album.

It was officially released on December 22, 2007 and serves as the second single from his third studio album, B.A.R.S. The Barry Adrian Reese Story (2007). The song, which was produced by Cassidy's longtime mentor and frequent collaborator Swizz Beatz, features vocals from English R&B singer Mark Morrison, sampling his song "Innocent Man".
