Beer in the United States

Beer in the United States is manufactured by more than 3,000 breweries, which range in size from industry giants to brew pubs and microbreweries. The United States produced 196 million barrels (23.0 GL) of beer in 2012, and consumes roughly 28 US gallons (110 L) of beer per capita annually. In 2011, the United States was ranked fifteenth in the world in per capita consumption, while total consumption was second only to China.

Although beer was a part of colonial life in the United States, the passing of the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1919 resulted in the prohibition of alcoholic beverage sales, forcing nearly all American breweries to close. After the repeal of Prohibition, the industry consolidated into a small number of large-scale breweries. Many of the big breweries that returned to producing beer after Prohibition, today largely owned by international conglomerates like Anheuser-Busch InBev or SABMiller, still retain their dominance of the market in the 21st century. However, the majority of the new breweries that have opened in the U.S. over the past three decades have been small breweries and brewpubs, referred to as "craft breweries" to differentiate them from the larger and older breweries.

American Beer (film)

American Beer is a 2002 feature-length documentary directed by Paul Kermizian that chronicles and documents the American craft brewing industry. The film was shot in the spring of 2002. Kermizian and a group of four left New York City and traveled by minivan across the United States visiting 38 craft and independent breweries in 40 days.

Breweries featured in the film include Dogfish Head Brewery, Shipyard Brewing, Victory Brewing Company, McNeill's Brewery, Climax Brewing, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, Anchor Brewing Company, New Glarus Brewing Company, New Belgium Brewing Company, Bell's Brewery and others.

The film screened at various film festivals throughout 2004 and 2005 and was released on DVD towards the end of 2005. A special edition of the DVD released shortly afterward contains more than 80 minutes of deleted scenes from breweries featured in the film along with other scenes deleted from the original cut.

As a result from their experiences from the film, Paul Kermizian ended up opening Barcade, a chain of hybrid arcade and craft beer bars in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia, and Jeremy Goldberg started a brewery called Cape Ann Brewing in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

American Beer (album)

American Beer is the fourth studio album by Fear, released in 2000. Many of the album's tracks were written and recorded during Fear's earlier years, but have not appeared on any prior studio albums.
