    Amaravati (also known as Indra Loka) is a figure in Hindu mythology. The heaven of Lord Indra is a region for the virtuous alone with celestial gardens called Nandana planted with sacred trees and sweet-scented flowers. The fragrant groves are occupied by Apsaras. Low sweet music plays. Indra's abode is eight hundred miles in circumference and forty miles in height.

    The pillars of Amaravati are composed of diamonds and its furniture is made of pure gold. Amaravati's palaces are also made of gold. Pleasant breezes carry the perfume of rose-colored flowers. Amaravati was built by Lord Vishwakarma, the architect of the gods, a son of Lord Brahma. The inhabitants of Amaravati are entertained by music, dancing and every sort of festivity.

    The audience chamber of Amaravati accommodates the three hundred and thirty million celestials, together with the forty-eight thousand Rishis and the multitude of attendants.

  • Amaravati (state capital)

    Amaravati is the proposed riverfront capital city of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is located on the southern banks of the River Krishna in Guntur and Krishna districts. The new city will cover an area of 217.23 sq. km., within the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region. The foundation stone of the planned city was laid at Uddandarayunipalem village of Guntur district by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 22 October 2015. The cities of Guntur and Vijayawada are the major suburbs of the city.

    Etymology

    The new capital is named after the historic site of Amaravathi, known as a center of Buddhist culture that flourished from 400 BC to 1100 AD.

    History

    As per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act (2014), Hyderabad became the capital of the newly formed state Telangana, following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. Amaravati is thus being built to serve as the capital of Andhra Pradesh now that Hyderabad will no longer be located in the state. However, Hyderabad would remain the joint capital of both states for a period of time not exceeding ten years until the development of the new capital is complete.
