The Alytus District Municipality (Lithuanian: Alytaus rajono savivaldybė) is a municipality in Alytus County, Lithuania, located in the Dzūkija ethnographic region.
This municipality was founded in 1950, and until 1953 was a part of the Kaunas Province. In 1959, another reorganization of parts of the former Simnas and Daugai municipalities occurred, which included the towns of Simnas and Daugai. In 1962 it was expanded more, attaching part of the former Jieznas municipality. In 1968 parts of the municipality were attached to the Prienai District Municipality and Trakai District Municipality, and 1969 another part of Varėna District Municipality.
The current Coat of Arms of the Alytus district municipality was announced by Lithuanian presidential decree on August 7, 2001.

Divided onto two separate entities for centuries, it consists of two parts still frequently referred to as Alytus I and Alytus II, the earlier being a smaller town and the latter forming the city centre with parks, microdistricts and industrial areas.
The name is derived from the Lithuanian hydronym Alytupis. In other languages the names of the town include German: Aliten, Olita, Polish: Olita, Russian: Олита Olita, Belarusian: Аліта Alita, Yiddish: אליטע Alite, Latvian: Alīta.
BC Alytus (Lithuanian: Krepšinio Klubas Alytus) is the historical basketball club of Alytus, Lithuania. It was founded in 2005 and participated in the Lietuvos Krepšinio Lyga (Lithuanian Basketball League) and the Baltic Basketball League for a few seasons. In 2011 BC Alytus went to bankruptcy, and another basketball club, called BC Savanoris, was established in Alytus.
