Althaea is the Latin rendering of Greek Ἀλθαία Althaia, which may be related to Greek ἀλθος althos "healing". It can refer to:
Althea, an English variation of the Greek name, can refer to:
Althaea or Althea /ælˈθiːə/ (Ancient Greek: Ἀλθαία, Althaía) was, in Greek mythology, the daughter of King Thestius and Eurythemis, and was sister to Leda, Hypermnestra, Iphiclus, Euippus. She was also the wife of Oeneus, king of Calydon, and mother of five sons, Meleager, Melanippe (one of the Meleagrids), Toxeus, Thyreus, Clymenus, and two daughters, Deianeira and Gorge. According to some writers, Meleager was the result of a liaison with the Greek god Ares, and Deianeira the progeny of Althaea and the god Dionysus.
Althaea is especially celebrated in ancient story about the fate of her son Meleager; they became the cause of each other’s deaths. When Meleager was born, the Moirai (the Fates) predicted he would only live until a brand, burning in the family hearth, was consumed by fire.
In Aeschylus' Libation Bearers Althaea is mentioned by the Chorus of captive slaves, serving women of Clytemnestra, in a recollection of 'hatreds that stopped at nothing'.
Meleager grew to be a well-respected prince. One spring Oeneus sacrificed the first fruits of the seasons to all the gods, omitting Artemis by mistake. Enraged by the slight, Artemis sent a boar of unnatural size and strength to ruin the land of Calydon. Meleager was one of the warriors who hunted the boar, along with the famous huntress Atalanta and Althaea’s brothers. Meleager killed the boar, but gave the skin to Atalanta both because he had fallen in love with her and because she had landed the first blow on the animal. When Althaea's brothers, “thinking scorn that a woman should get the prize in the face of men, took the skin from her, alleging that it belonged to them by right of birth if Meleager did not choose to take it,” Meleager flew into a rage and killed both of his uncles.
Althaea is a genus of 6–12 species of perennial herbs native to Europe and western Asia. It includes Althaea officinalis, also known as the marshmallow plant, whence the fluffy confection got its name. They are found on the banks of rivers and in salt marshes, preferring moist, sandy soils. The stems grow to 1–2 m tall, and flower in mid summer. The leaves are palmately lobed with 3–7 lobes. Althaea species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Bucculatrix quadrigemina.
The genus formerly included a number of additional species now treated in the genus Alcea (Hollyhocks).
The root contains starch (37%), mucilage (11%), pectin (11%), flavonoids, phenolic acids, sucrose, and asparagine.
The traditional medicinal uses of the plant are reflected in the name of the genus, which comes from the Greek althainein, meaning "to heal".
The flowers and young leaves can be eaten, and are often added to salads or are boiled and fried. The roots and stem also secrete mucilage, which is used to soften the skin, and is used in cosmetic treatments.
What cut straight through my blinds was
Light, light to live by
Open my eyes, and my oh my
This day is gonna be good
Not gonna fuss about fashion
Not fret about time
Open my door, and thank the Lord
This day is gonna be good
Life has smiled on me
Mornin' sings to me
Happy trails are callin'
Callin' my name out loud
Life has smiled on me
Mornin' sings to me
Happy trails are callin'
Hey, yeah...
Tan faces, pick-up trucks
Smiles break free and our eyes light up
Climb on in and sit on back
This ride is gonna be good
Who knows what this day holds
Barefeet or sandles?
I vow to live it, minute by minute
This life is gonna be good
God has smiled on me
Mornin' sings to me
Happy trails are callin'
Callin' my name out loud
God has smiled on me
Mornin' sings to me
Happy trails are callin'
Hey, yeah...
