Altaf Hussain

Altaf Hussain (Urdu: الطاف حسین; pronounced [əlt̪aːf ɦʊseːn]; born 17 September 1953 in Karachi) is a Pakistani politician living in exile as a naturalised citizen in the United Kingdom. He is the leader and founder of the Karachi-based political party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), a party aimed at defending the interests of the muhajir community and the Urdu-speaking descendants of Muslims who moved from India to Pakistan after their independence from Britain in 1947.

Hussain belongs to a muhajir family that moved from Agra, Uttar Pradesh in India to settle in Pakistan following Pakistan's independence from Britain in 1947. He joined student politics by forming the All Pakistan Muhajir Students Organization (APMSO) in 1978 and later stepped into mainstream politics by founding the MQM in 1984, which is now the fourth largest political party in the National Assembly of Pakistan. Hussain's party has had political influence in Pakistan since the 1990s by being a part of several governing coalitions. The party's political strongholds are the urban cities of Karachi and Hyderabad in Pakistan. As of 2014, Hussain lives in Edgware in north-west London where he applied for and was granted political asylum in 1992.

    Altaf Hussain was an East Pakistani cricketer who played 1st class cricket in the 1960s. Overall, he played 6 1st class matches for different teams of East Pakistan.

    A right arm fast bowler, he made his 1st class debut, playing for the East Pakistan team against a strong Karachi Green side in Karachi the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy . He failed to pick up any wickets in his debut match. And although he went wikcetless, in his next 1st class match as well, at the famous national stadium, Karachi, he enjoyed a fine match, playing for Dacca, against Dacca University, at the outer stadium, in March 1965. In this match, his 2/20 and 3/9 contributed greatly to a big win for the Dacca team.

    Overall, in 6 1st class matches, he picked 6 wickets at 36 a piece.

    After retirement he got heavily involved with cricket coaching. His contribution to the game was recognized by BSJA, who awarded him in the special category in 2012.

    Dr. Altaf Hussain is a Welsh Conservative South Wales West regional Assembly Member in the National Assembly for Wales since 2015. He is a retired orthopaedic surgeon. He sits on the Health Committee at the National Assembly for Wales, and is Shadow Minister for Social Services.

    Background

    Dr Altaf Hussain was an orthopedic surgeon for the NHS in Wales before his selection as a Welsh Conservative Party Assembly candidate and was formerly based at the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.

    As a surgeon, his work in developing the Notch Trial method in total knee replacement surgery was showcased at the World Orthopaedic Conference.

    He is a recipient of the Best Practice Team Award 2007, the Glory of India Award 2008 and has been featured in “Who’s Who in the World” between 2009 and 2014, as well as featuring regularly in "Who's Who in Science and Engineering".

    He remains active in the field of Orthopaedic research and continues to deliver lectures on a 'pro bono' basis.
